VALENCIA. It could be the second case of bird influenza in Spain, although one is a variant that is not lethal for the people and very rarely in the birds. In this occasion it is a duck that was found in the lake of the Natural Park of the Lagoon of Valencia [Parque Natural de la Albufera de Valencia] this same week dead.
The technicians of the Valencian Generalitat, so and as settle down the protocol for possible cases of bird influenza, made analysis of the bird and sent samples to Madrid, along with those of other 36 found birds in the last died days and whose analyses had revealed some anomaly. Shortly after, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed to the Generalitat that between the received samples was a suspicious case of bird influenza.
Evolution of the virus
The minister of Agriculture, Elena Espinosa, confirmed yesterday that it is a case of Influeza Aviar de Baja Patogeneidad (LPAI), a bird influenza that is commonest and not highly lethal in birds, although will be necessary to make more tests to see how the virus evolves.
The autonomic Consejeria of Agriculture, like prevention measurement, has sent technicians to the farms installed in an operational range of 10 kilometers of the Natural Park of the Lagoon, although all the made analyses have given until now negative result, reason why they insisted on which the risk of I infect is very low and, therefore, is no reason for alarm.
Zone of special monitoring
The Lagoon is one of the 34 humedales including in the zones of risk by the Ministry. This zone has been object of special monitoring for months, because they are zones with great migration of birds. For that reason, the technicians take blood samples and animal lees, as much alive as deads, although until now the result of all of them had been negative in all the parameters.
The first case of bird influenza in Spain was a wild aquatic bird, somormujo lavanco, whose corpse was found in July in the humedal of Salburua, to little kilometers of Vitoria. Spain thus became the fourteenth country of the European Union in registering cases of bird influence by virus H5N1.
