PALMA .- Second fatality in Balearic influenza. A toddler [2 yrs. old] has died in hospital Son Ll?tzer of Palma on Sunday, barely twenty four hours after being admitted. The youngest was a chronic disease called mitochondrial encephalopathy.

The child was admitted on Friday evening with a high fever. Because it was within the risk groups and that several relatives had flu, Tamiflu and bronchodilators was supplied.

The child had a very serious underlying condition called mitochondrial encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative disease that affects various organs of the body depending on the part of the brain that is damaged, says the Regional Ministry in a statement.

At 24 hours after being admitted, the state of the child worsened, so he intensified antibiotic treatment. At 23:45 hours on Saturday, he was transferred to ICU Son Dureta, without he could finally move because the child suffered respiratory arrest that caused his death early Sunday.
