CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – Phase One has started

Today, Monday 11 May, around 51% of the Spanish population has moved to Phase One of the government’s four-phase plan to lift lockdown restrictions – but many are doing so with caution.

In a televised address over the weekend, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S?nchez had also called for ‘prudence and caution’ ahead of this first key phase of the lockdown de-escalation plan – following the ‘preparatory’ Phase Zero.

On Friday evening the Spanish Health Ministry had announced what regions, provinces and also healthcare zone moving to Phase One from today – as well as those that remain in Phase Zero. Madrid and Barcelona currently still remain in Phase Zero, as well as M?laga and Granada in Andalusia, and most of the Valencia region – among many other areas.

We have published all the key rules and measures regarding the four phases in a separate report, together with the current ‘phase status’ for each region. It is regularly updated as and when new measures are announced. The report can be found here: Lifting of lockdown in Spain – full details of all phases for all regions.

Spain records lowest single-day death toll in two months

My colleague Sam Jones has filed this update from Spain:

Spain has recorded its lowest single-day death toll in two months.

According to the latest figures from the health ministry, 87 people have died from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, down from 102 the day before. The country has confirmed 231,350 cases of the virus using PCR tests, and reported 27,650 deaths.

Of the 166 new hospital admissions for Covid-19, 67 were in Madrid and 38 in Catalonia.

The Madrid region, the Barcelona metropolitan area and parts of Castilla y Le?n remain in the preliminary phase of Spain’s lockdown de-escalation, while 70% of the country has moved to the next phase. The continuing lockdown has sparked protests in wealthy parts of the capital and in other cities.

To date, Spain has reported 232,037 cases using PCR tests, and recorded 27,778 deaths.

Spain held a minute’s silence on Wednesday to pay tribute to the more than 27,000 people who have died from Covid-19 in the country as it begins a 10-day period of mourning.

At midday, politicians, the royal family, hospital staff, police officers, civil servants and citizens across the country paused to remember those lost in what has been one of Europe’s worst coronavirus outbreaks.

Healthcare workers, who have led the campaign against Covid-19 and account for roughly 50,000 of the 237,000 confirmed cases since the outbreak began in Spain, stood outside hospitals and medical centers to mark the moment of solemnity.
