Barcelona, Sep 28 (EFE).- An outbreak of salmonellosis at Figueres Hospital (Girona) and at the Bernat Jaume Intermediate Care Hospital in the same city has affected 17 people, including patients and healthcare professionals, sources from the Department of Health told EFE on Saturday.
Technicians from the Girona Public Health Agency, together with the Fundación Salut Empordà, which manages the two hospitals, are monitoring this outbreak of salmonellosis, which was detected on 19 September.
The Foundation's Occupational Health Unit reported the outbreak to the Epidemiological Surveillance Service on Tuesday 24, when there were already ten people affected, including health and kitchen professionals and patients from the two centres.
Those affected are experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever, which in the case of the Intermediate Care Hospital, which cares for the elderly, has been added to other underlying diseases.
The same health sources have reported that the Public Health Agency of Catalonia immediately agreed on preventive measures to avoid new infections and actively searched for cases with the help of the Foundation's professionals.
The investigation into how this outbreak could have arisen is still active today, although no new cases are expected given that the outbreak began almost ten days ago and the illness usually lasts between two and seven days.
