Measles outbreak in Alcantarilla affecting three people originated at a baptism
Health authorities confirm that the cases are progressing favorably and urge vigilance during the incubation period, while recommending vaccination for those who are not immunized

The measles outbreak detected in Alcantarilla affects three people: two adults around 48 years old and a 12-month-old baby, who are not from the same household. All are doing well and progressing favorably.

The outbreak originated at a baptism, and to prevent further spread, the Epidemiology Department is monitoring the contacts of those affected, approximately 400 people so far. Health officials state that the situation is not worrisome and that no further cases have been detected. The Director General of Public Health, José Jesús Guillén, explained that the initial case occurred in one of the two adults, both of whom were born between 1978 and the early 1980s.

This was a period before the measles vaccination campaigns had begun. Therefore, Guillén advises those who have not yet had the disease to get vaccinated. The 12-month-old baby infected with measles is in good health. The baby was unvaccinated, not because the parents refused, but because the MMR vaccine was not yet due. Public Health will be monitoring contacts for two weeks, the incubation period of the disease, and these contacts are advised to wear masks.

Measles transmission has been re-established in Spain after a decade in which the country had achieved "measles-free" status. The Regional Ministry of Health points out that the vaccination rate among children is high in the Region: 95% for the first dose and 92% for the second.

The number of measles cases in the outbreak detected in Alcantarilla (Murcia) has risen to 8, as confirmed by the Regional Ministry of Health.

The Regional Minister, Juan José Pedreño, in statements reported by the radio station Onda Regional, highlighted the control carried out by the Epidemiology Service, whose work has allowed the cases to be contained and contacts to be identified, so the spread of the virus "is limited," he said.

The Regional Ministry of Health has not provided details about those affected and specified that four of the patients were located because they were contacts of a previous case and were subsequently confirmed, which has helped to limit the spread of the virus.

As of last Thursday, four cases had been identified: two adults and a baby from Alcantarilla, and a woman from that town with an epidemiological link to one of the three previous cases.

Initially, the possibility that the outbreak originated at a baptism celebration in that municipality was investigated, but this hypothesis was later ruled out.

According to the Regional Ministry of Health, the first cases were confirmed on May 5th, and since then the time between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis has been significantly reduced, from two weeks for the first patients to five days for the most recent diagnoses...

Murcia

The Murcia Health Department has confirmed to EFE a total of nine measles cases since May 5, according to updated epidemiological surveillance data.

The measles outbreak in Alcantarilla began with three initial cases: two adults and an 11-month-old baby, all residents of the municipality. There is no clear epidemiological link between them, and the index case has not yet been identified.

A fourth case was subsequently added on May 14th, involving an adult woman from Alcantarilla with a link to one of the previous cases. Between May 14th and 19th, the remaining four cases were confirmed, bringing the total to eight confirmed cases in the outbreak, all located in Alcantarilla, in addition to the case announced this Monday.

The outbreak's evolution also shows a shortening of the time between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis, which has decreased from two weeks in the initial cases to five days in the most recent ones.

The Epidemiology Service of the Regional Ministry of Health continues its case and contact tracing investigations in accordance with the protocol of the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network, the source added.

A measles outbreak in Mallorca has affected at least six people, according to the Ministry of Health. The cases are related to each other and the patients have been treated in the same hospital, although health authorities have determined that the source of the contagion is not in the healthcare setting and have classified it as a community outbreak.

The epidemiological investigation conducted by the Public Health Surveillance Service has placed the first case in a minor tourist who went to the pediatric emergency room of the Son Espases University Hospital on July 19.

The secondary cases began to show symptoms at the end of July. Of the six affected people, five are not vaccinated against measles, while there is no vaccination record for the sixth...

Public Health reports the detection of a measles outbreak in Mallorca

The General Directorate has activated a surveillance and monitoring protocol to prevent the spread of the outbreak, which has six confirmed cases.
Vaccination coverage in the archipelago is high and reaches 91.11% of the target population

The Public Health Surveillance Service has detected several cases of measles in Mallorca, affecting six people. Given that the patients coincided in time and were treated at the same hospital, the cases are related to each other, although the origin of the infection is not related to the healthcare sector and is classified as a community outbreak.

The epidemiological investigation detected that the index case is a minor tourist who went to the pediatric emergency room at the Son Espases Hospital on July 19. The secondary cases began to show symptoms at the end of July.

The outbreak mainly affects unvaccinated people: of the six confirmed infections, five had not received the vaccine and the other has no vaccination record.

For this reason, the General Directorate of Public Health, in coordination with the Health Service and in compliance with the protocols of the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network, has activated a monitoring and control plan that includes immediate prevention and protection measures to contain the outbreak.

Public Health carries out tracing tasks and asks close contacts to maintain strict monitoring of their health for the 23 days following exposure, a priority measure for those who are not vaccinated.

Mask recommendation for staff and users

The General Directorate of Public Health has sent an internal recommendation for the use of FFP2 masks in all healthcare settings as a priority measure for the prevention, protection and control of the outbreak, as well as mandatory self-monitoring of symptoms and review of the vaccination status of all personnel (health and non-healthcare) in healthcare centers and hospitals.

Increase in measles cases in the international context

Currently, and over the last two years, the number of measles cases has been steadily increasing at the national and international levels. In the Balearic Islands, in 2019, only one case was reported; between 2020 and 2023, the Islands recorded none, and in 2024, six cases were reported.

During 2025, 35 cases were registered: 31 in Mallorca, 3 in Ibiza (imported outbreak) and 1 imported case in Formentera. Of these cases, 24 were not vaccinated, and the vaccination schedule for the rest is unknown.

Of the 31 cases registered in Mallorca in 2025, 22 correspond to the outbreak produced in the Tramuntana Health Sector, 3 were isolated cases, 3 from an outbreak of home transmission and 3 were imported.

Vaccination, the main prevention tool

Public Health reminds that complete protection against measles requires two doses of the vaccine. In the Balearic Islands, immunization is fully guaranteed and is included in the free public calendar: the first dose is administered at 12 months of age (triple viral) and the second at 3 years of age (tetraviral), which ensures effective coverage against the virus.

Currently, vaccination coverage in the archipelago is very high, reaching 91.11% of the target population. For people born after 1978 who are not vaccinated or who have not had the disease, it is recommended to take advantage of any medical consultation or visit to review and update their vaccination history.

In Spain, systematic vaccination against measles began in 1978 with the monovalent vaccine, replaced in 1981 by the triple viral vaccine (measles, rubella and mumps). Therefore, it is recommended that people born after these years who do not have proof of having been vaccinated or of having transmitted the disease go to their health center to review and complete their schedule.

Symptoms and transmission of measles

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by a virus. It is one of the so-called exanthematic diseases, because one of its clinical characteristics is the appearance of rashes on the skin, which are accompanied by fever and cold symptoms, such as conjunctivitis, mucus, sneezing, cough and impairment of the general condition.

A person with measles is contagious from 4 days before the rash appears until 4 days after symptoms appear. The usual incubation period is 10 to 14 days, although it can also vary between 7 and 23 days.

The measles virus is transmitted by direct contact with nasal or throat secretions from an infected person, or by inhalation of droplets released when coughing or sneezing. On surfaces, the pathogen can remain active for up to two hours afterward.
