Spain health officials issue urgent warning as virus cases spread in favourite Irish hotspots

Spanish authorities have issued an alert over a disease which is on the rise, with 13 new cases this week detected. West Nile disease is said to be spreading in Spain, with the new outbreak said to be in the Sevilla and Huelva areas.

The Andalucian health department said six cases were detected in Dos Hermanas, just a few kilometres from Sevilla city. ln Sevilla, a three cases were declared in Coria del Rio, andone case each in La Puebla del Rio, Mairena del Aljarafe and Alcala de Guadaira with the last in Campofrio, in Huelva province, reports The Mirror.

The authorities are concerned surge in cases of the disease which is spread by mosquitos. The Junta de Andalucía's Ministry of Health said it has detected the presence of West Nile virus in test captures of mosquitoes carried out between 1 and 8 August in the Seville province municipalities of Almensilla, Bollullos de la Mitación, Dos Hermanas, Gelves, Los Palacios y Villafranca and Villamanrique de la Condesa, as well as in Barbate (Cadiz province), many of the areas being very popular among British tourists and expats.​..

The death toll in the southern Spanish province of Seville from the West Nile virus has risen to five in the past month, officials said Monday.

Two more people died from the virus in the town of Coria del Rio, bringing the toll in the province to five, according to the Regional Ministry of Health and Families of Andalusia.

Four of the victims were aged from 71 to 87.

A total of 10 cases have been reported in Dos Hermanas, Los Palacios y Villafranca, Coria del Rio, Gerena and Carmona in Seville, with five deaths and three discharged, while two patients are still undergoing treatment, added the ministry.​..

​ANDALUCIA’S Health Ministry confirmed on Thursday that a Navarre women died from the West Nile virus after visiting Utrera in Sevilla province- taking the death toll to six this summer.

She had suffered from various conditions and everybody that has died from the virus in Andalucia have been in the Sevilla area or had visited it.

Authorities verified on August 12 that the latest victim went to Utrera and returned home where died from fever with the virus only transmitted to people via mosquito bites.​..

Deaths from West Nile Virus continue to be reported in Andalusia, bringing the total number of deaths in the second outbreak to seven.

The latest victim was a resident of Mairena del Aljarafe, Seville, with pre-existing health conditions. While mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus have been detected in several Andalusian provinces, including Seville, Cádiz, Huelva, Córdoba, Jaén, and Málaga, the majority of deaths have occurred in municipalities within the Seville territory.​..

The Ministry of Health confirmed This Monday, the eighth death due to the West Nile virus in AndalusiaThis is the first victim in the Sevillian capital this year, where the victims are concentrated in the province.

Until now. Because this first death in the capital – who had previous pathologies – joins eight other cases which the department headed by Rocio Hernández is already registered. These are new infections in the province of Seville as well as in Huelva or Cadiz.

More specifically, they were recorded in La Campana, Los Palacios and Villafranca, Coria del Río and Mairena del Aljarafeone person in the Cordoba municipality of Fernán Núñez, another in the Huelva municipality of Rosal de la Frontera and in the Cadiz municipalities of Medina Sidonia and Vejer de la Frontera...
