The Community of Madrid confirms a case of monkeypox in a 7-month-old baby

20 July 2022

The General Directorate of Public Health of the Community of Madrid has confirmed a case of monkey pox or monkeypox in a 7-month-old baby who has contracted the disease at home, since his parents have also had the infection. Both the minor and her parents are in good health and the baby is kept in isolation at her home. Health indicates that it is a specific case due to the coincidence of the infection in the baby's parents and that the transmission has occurred during their care.

To date, the Ministry of Health has detected 1,577 cases of monkeypox and has ruled out 403 suspicions. At a general level, the same contagion profile is maintained as until now, that is, men who have sex with men in high-risk situations.

On the other hand, Health has begun this week to administer the pre-exposure vaccine against monkeypox to people aged 18 to 45 with high-risk sexual practices and meet established clinical criteria. The administration of the dose is carried out by appointment on the website of the Community of Madrid and has begun by enabling 50 daily openings that will be expanded depending on demand.

In addition, the General Directorate of Public Health, together with the Madrid City Council, associations and NGOs, has developed, since the activation of the health alert, informative campaigns on preventive measures against monkeypox with recommendations and the establishment of a direct telephone line to solve doubts attended by experts in social mediation, 646 13 24 56 , as well as an email to answer queries, virueladelmono@salud.madrid.org .

In parallel, a specific space has been created on the Internet on monkeypox ( https://www.comunidad.madrid/servici...d/viruela-mono ) on the symptoms, transmission, diagnosis and prevention of this infection.

Andalusia

The Board closes a tattoo shop in San Fernando (Cádiz) due to an outbreak of monkeypox

The Ministry of Health has detected twelve cases and is looking for more contacts linked to business users

THE REASON
CADIZCREATED07-24-2022 | 11:00 A.M.
LAST UPDATE07-24-2022 | 11:09AM

A group of twelve cases of monkeypox, declared in the Epidemiological Surveillance System of Andalusia, have been detected related to a tattoo, micropigmentation and piercing establishment located in the town of San Fernando (Cádiz).

As reported by sources from the Ministry of Health and Families, the epidemiological investigation has begun regarding the active search for cases and contacts, the establishment has been inspected and its closure has been carried out preventively .

The Ministry of Health and Families, through the General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Regulation, has recalled the importance of performing tattoos and piercings correctly , in such a way that it does not generate risks to the health of the users or for the workers themselves.

Spain: cases of monkey pox detected in a tattoo parlor in Andalusia

Published on :07/25/2022 - 14:26
...
With our correspondent in Madrid, François Musseau

A tattoo, micro-pigmentation and piercing center in San Fernando, a large coastal town in the province of Cadiz. This is where new infections with the monkeypox virus occurred. Precisely twelve cases have been identified for the first time in this type of establishment.

The news was taken very seriously by the regional health authorities of Andalusia, one of the most affected regions of the country, with more than 270 confirmed cases, to which must be added 58 under study. These authorities immediately submitted the cases of these new infections to the official center for epidemiological investigations. Monkeypox is transmitted through sex or through the air, if the distance is relatively close.

Questions about the practice of tattooing

But the researchers also want to know if the practice of tattooing or piercing can also be a vector of transmission that we had not thought of until then. And if, in general, these practices are dangerous for health. For the time being, the information has also been relayed to the national Ministry of Health so that it informs all of the 22 Spanish regions.

Confirmed the first death in Spain from monkeypox

UpdatedFriday, July 29, 2022 - 9:20 p.m.

The Ministry of Health of the Valencian Community has confirmed that the death was caused by encephalitis associated with the infection
...
This death has been registered in the Valencian Community , as specified by the Coselleria de Sanidad. This death was caused by encephalitis associated with the infection and the case is being analyzed to determine definitive confirmation of the cause of death.

In Spain, it had been confirmed that until now the circulating strain of monkeypox was that of Nigeria and as Alfredo Corell , professor of Immunology at the University of Valladolid and member of the Spanish Society of Immunology, points out, "this strain has a lower lethality but 1% with the number of cases we have is even a few deaths. We are facing the possibility of regretting more deaths." And he recalls that "the Congo strain can reach 10% lethality."

Along with the announcement of the deceased in Spain, Brazil confirmed this Friday the first death recorded in the country due to monkeypox, a disease of which they have already detected just over a thousand cases.

The latest WHO report points to five deaths, but in endemic areas. " So far there have been five deaths and about 10% of monkeypox cases are admitted to hospital to control the pain caused by the disease," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director of the WHO in an intervention last Wednesday. . So the total worldwide amounts to seven.

The date of onset of symptoms is available in 3,943 cases. Of these, the first reported case started symptoms
on April 26 and the last on July 25. See figure 2. There is a delay between the date of onset of symptoms and the
diagnostic confirmation date, with a median of 6 days (IQR 4-9 days). On the other hand, there is also a
delay in reporting cases to the SiViEs platform. For these reasons, the data should not be interpreted
corresponding to the last days of the curve.

Currently, there are 525 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the autonomous community, with Malaga (246), Seville (115), and Cádiz (60) being the most affected provinces. Currently, there are 345 active cases.

According to data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE) , as of July 29, a total of 4,298 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in Spain.

Of the 3,750 for which information is available, 120 cases have been hospitalized (3.2%) and two of them have already died, according to what was specified this Saturday by Health, which has communicated the information to the World Health Organization ( WHO) and the European Commission.

This case is the first death in the community and the second at the national level after the one registered in the Valencian Community and which was caused by encephalitis associated with the infection, as detailed by the Ministry of Universal Health.

The two deceased are young men and at this time the Public Health services of the autonomous communities to which they correspond are expanding the information on the cases. In addition, laboratory results of different samples from the National Center for Microbiology of the Carlos III Health Institute are awaited.

On the other hand, the latest Renave report also collects data by autonomous community, with Madrid (1,656) and Catalonia (1,406) being the regions with the most cases of monkeypox. They are followed by Andalusia (498), Valencian Community (213), Canary Islands (102), Basque Country (98), Balearic Islands (89), Aragon (45), Galicia (37), Asturias (36), Castilla y León (31) , Castilla-La Mancha (23), Extremadura (20), Murcia (19), Cantabria (15), Navarra (8) and La Rioja (2).

In relation to attendance at mass events, of the 3,137 cases with information on this variable, 560 attended an event on the dates prior to the onset of symptoms.

Health has warned that Spain is "currently one of the most affected countries globally." "During the months of May and June 2022 , there was an upward trend in reported cases that continues at the present time," he warned.

The Ministry has also indicated that, as in the rest of the countries, the cases have been identified fundamentally in the MSM population -men who have sex with men- being "the transmission mechanism in the vast majority of cases through very physical contact". narrow, primarily in the context of high-risk sexual intercourse'.

The department headed by Carolina Darias has stressed, however, that if said sustained transmission "is not optimally controlled" there will be "a significant risk" that it will spread "to other population groups by the same transmission mechanism, with the possibility of affectation of other groups and the appearance of serious cases in vulnerable populations”.
