Southern Leyte Gov forms avian flu task force

Maasin City (October 3) -- Southern Leyte Gov. Damian Mercado has recently released an order creating the Provincial Avian Influenza Task Force.
Executive Order Number 009 which was signed by Gov. Mercado on September 8, the Governor himself sits as the Chairman of the said Task Force, with two Co-Chairmen, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Joselito Trumata and Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Victor Macopia.
Among the Task Force's members are the following: Department of Health (DOH) Representative Dr. Feliciano Matibag, Jr., Dr. Violeta Alocilja, the Schools Division Superintendent of the Department of Education (DepEd); Fidel Adal, PENR Officer of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Dr. Gloria Reyes, President of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), Juan Badocdoc, Provincial Director, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG);
PSSupt. Nilo Donayre, Provincial Director of the Philippine National Police (PNP), this writer for the Philippine Information Agency (PIA); a private sector representative who was not yet specified, Daniel Mayorca, the provincial Agriculturist, and Pedro Sorio, of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (PENRMO).
The executive order that formed the task force stressed that the Philippines has remained to be free of avian influenza, also called Bird Flu, and that "it is necessary that this situation will be preserved to protect the country's poultry industry whose value of production based on 2005 statistics was more than one hundred billion pesos."
"Avian influenza is a major concern not only of veterinary health but also a threat to human health and, hence, requires a coordinated and collaborative approach from both health and veterinary authorities," the order stressed, adding that it has become a serious fowl disease, causing worldwide trauma due to reported human deaths.
Among the functions of the task force was to ensure the province's preparedness for any eventual entry of the contagious bird flu virus "in order to protect and promote the health and safety of the people in the province."
Funding for the task force to work on will be sourced from the 20% development fund, the order stated. (PIA-Southern Leyte)
