Hepatitis E monitoring continues in refugee camps
Aid organizations in Upper Nile State continued to monitor for new cases of Hepatitis E, which broke out in three refugee camps in Maban County in September, namely Gendrassa, Jamam and Yusuf Batil. Four cases have been confirmed in the host community. In addition, two suspected cases have been reported in Doro settlement and are undergoing investigation. Health partners in Maban continued to carry out community sensitization, active case identification and hygiene promotion in order to contain the outbreak. A total of 791 cases of acute jaundice syndrome, some of which have been confirmed as Hepatitis E, have been identified across the three camps as of 3 October. Hepatitis E has caused the death of 22 people so far, according to UNHCR. The average age of people diagnosed is 25 years, and close to 60 per cent of those infected are female.

Cash-strapped UNHCR warns of hepatitis E outbreak in S Sudan
The UN has warned about the spread of hepatitis E among refugees in South Sudan, saying the body is in urgent need of funds to continue its lifesaving activities in the African country.


"With funding depleted for our operations in South Sudan, UNHCR is warning today that the capacity to contain an outbreak of hepatitis E among the refugee population is increasingly stretched," the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Spokesman Adrian Edwards told reporters in Geneva on Friday.

Edwards explained that the UN refugee agency, along with other aid organizations, has been battling a hepatitis E outbreak in Upper Nile and Unity State, home to 175,000 Sudanese refugees.

The disease, which affects the liver, is endemic in the two regions where nearly 1,050 cases have been reported in the refugee camps, he pointed out, adding that the virus is rapidly spreading through the consumption of contaminated food and water. ..

JUBA (Reuters) - An outbreak of hepatitis E has killed 88 people in South Sudan after a surge in the virus hit refugee camps near the Sudanese border, an aid agency said on Saturday.

More than 175,000 people have sought refuge in the new country of South Sudan after fleeing fighting in Sudan's restive border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile, according to the United Nations.

Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said it had treated almost 4,000 patients since the outbreak was identified in camps in the northeast of South Sudan in July 2012...

An outbreak of Hepatitis E, in South Sudan, has led to 107 deaths since July.

The disease, which has mostly hit refugee camps, is said to be on the rise in the country forcing the authorities to request the support from the international community to help eliminate it...
