Eight dead in suspected Sudan cholera outbreak: report

January 16, 2017 (KHARTOUM) - Eight people have died and 342 infected at several Sudanese states in a second wave of a suspected cholera outbreak within five months, said a report by the independent Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors.

The report, which was seen by Sudan Tribune on Monday, said the preliminary tests of diarrhea samples proved they were cholera cases, pointing such cases are usually confirmed by a reference laboratory and announced by the Department of Epidemiology at the Health Ministry.

It pointed that a number of cases have been reported in Khartoum, Gazeera and Red Sea states, saying ?such cases must be handled with utmost seriousness to ensure the safety of patients and curtail the spread of the epidemic?...

Doctors confirm 'diarrhoea' outbreak in Sudan is cholera
February 1 - 2017 LONDON / KHARTOUM

All reports and symptoms of an outbreak of deadly and acute watery diarrhoea in eastern Sudanese states point to the spread of cholera, according to a Sudanese epidemiology specialist based in the United Kingdom.

The so-called widespread acute watery diarrhoea in El Gedaref and Red Sea is in fact cholera, UK-based epidemiology and infectious diseases specialist Dr Ezzeldin Gamar told Radio Dabanga on Tuesday.

Dr Gamar declared that he and his colleagues in Sudan ?are very convinced that it is cholera,? and not, as reported by federal and state governments, an outbreak of watery diarrhoea across Sudan's eastern Red Sea and El Gedaref states.

The disease has continued to claim lives over the past five months: there have been a number of deaths and the federal Health Ministry has acknowledged the spread of the ?watery diarrhoea epidemic? in eastern Sudan and Khartoum. The Ministry reported that last week that 333 people were suffering from the deadly disease in El Gedaref, Red Sea, and Khartoum states, but did not announce clear measures to contain the disease...

Sudan: Cholera Deaths in Sudan's Red Sea

Port Sudan / Khartoum ? Three people reportedly died from cholera and dozens of new cases have been hospitalised in Red Sea state on Thursday, medical sources in eastern Sudan reported.

Cases of cholera, designated by the Government of Sudan as acute watery diarrhoea, in the eastern Red Sea state have emerged in the area of Emour in El Ganab locality. "But there is a lack of qualified health facilities and medical staff in El Ganab," journalist Osman Hashim reported to Radio Dabanga...

Sudan: Cholera Cases Rising Again in Eastern Sudan's El Gedaref

El Gedaref ? The rate of cholera infection which is claimed by Sudan's government to be acute watery diarrhoea has resumed rising again in El Gedaref after it has seen a drop down over the past period.

A health source told Radio Dabanga that the isolation ward at El Gedaref hospital is overcrowded with cholera infected patients.

"The number of cases in El Gedaref Hospital isolation ward is more than 20, while the average daily visit to the hospital amounts to five cases," he said...

37 died in cholera outbreak in Eastern Lakes State

At least 37 people died of cholera in Eastern Lakes and other 13 cases were recorded in Jonglei State, local officials announced on Monday.

Tong Koyom, Yirol County Commissioner in Eastern Lakes State, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that a medical team from the state ministry of health reported that at least 37 people died of cholera in three counties along the River Nile.

?There are no signs of cholera cases in my county, but there are three areas along the River Nile where 37 people died due to cholera disease according to the state ministry of health. The areas include Adior, Shambe, and even Minkaman of Awerial County,? said Tong.

Koryom pointed out that the state ministry of health had dispatched a medical team to those areas in order to carry out a campaign against cholera...

Health workers in eastern Sudan reported that four new cases of cholera have emerged in several areas. Red Sea state said that the outbreak has been brought under control, praising the activities of civil society organisations.

Basunda, El Hamra and El Baburi in El Gedaref recorded the cases on Sunday, while one person with cholera was reported in Darel Zain on Saturday, an authorised health source speaking to Radio Dabanga said.

He said that there are continued efforts of civil society organisations in an attempt to combat the disease, in addition to the state health authorities? distribution of medicines to various health facilities...

Sudan: Cholera Infections Growing Among Children in Sudan's El Gedaref

El Gedaref ? Health sources from Sudan's El Gedaref state revealed the death of a child and infection of several others with cholera on Tuesday and Wednesday. Contaminated drinking water is the suspected source.

The medics told Radio Dabanga that El Gallabat East locality recorded the death of a child and infection of four others with cholera at El Gireishi hospital while El Hamra area recorded three cases of the disease on Tuesday.

Cases of cholera are also suspected at Wedel Zein area of El Gedaref, while Sabonia area of West El Gallabat locality recorded three cases...

(UPDATE 21/03/2017 09:00) More than 47 people have been infected with cholera in El Gallabat locality in eastern Sudan between Friday and Monday. A patient succumbed to the disease last week.

The woman died in El Jinan, El Gallabat West locality, on Thursday, where three people were also infected with the disease.

A source in the health sector of El Gedaref state reported to Radio Dabanga that from Friday to Monday, 30 cases of cholera were reported in El Saraf El Ahmer, and more than seventeen cases in El Mahalla; both in El Gallabat locality. There have been no deaths among the newly infected people.

Another two cases emerged in El Saboni in El Gallabat on Thursday, after three infected people from El Gallabat East reported to the hospital on Wednesday, the medical worker said last week.

Yesterday state health authorities deployed teams of doctors and nurses to the affected areas in a way to curb the spreading of infections...

Cholera stalks 'refugee islands' in swamplands of South Sudan

GANYIEL, South Sudan, April 6 (UPI) -- Kneeling over a pot of water drawn from the nearby swamp, Veronica feigns a smile as her eyes dart toward the floor of her small hut. "I know it's dirty but I have no other choice," says the 35-year-old South Sudanese mother of four.

A few years earlier, Veronica lost her 3-year-old daughter to cholera. Several months ago, another of her children contracted the disease and Veronica herself spent 10 days in hospital receiving treatment. On South Sudan's tiny island of Tayar, in Unity State, there's no escaping this debilitating epidemic.

Once a commercial trading island with only 200 inhabitants, Tayar is now home to 2,300 internally displaced people who have sought refuge from South Sudan's three-year civil war. They live with no toilets or running water, openly defecating in the island's surrounding swamplands. This same filthy water is then used for cooking, bathing and drinking. Thus, cholera has become rife in this makeshift community...

Cholera kills 172 in South Sudan: UN

JUBA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- At least 172 people have died from cholera outbreak across 14 counties in South Sudan since the initial outbreak was reported in June last year, the UN said on Thursday.

The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said as at April 14, 6,222 cholera cases had been reported since the initial case was recorded on June 18, 2016.

"New cases have continued to be reported in new locations across the country during the dry season," OCHA said in its latest report released in Juba.

According to the UN, there are concerns that the outbreak will intensify and spread during the upcoming rainy season due to continued conflict, displacement and inadequate access to clean water and sanitation...

Sudan: Cholera Death, 40 New Cases in Sudan's White Nile State

Um Jar ? A woman died of cholera in Um Jar locality in White Nile state on Sunday.

Medical sources told Radio Dabanga that a woman cholera patient died at the Kateer Balla Health Centre on Sunday.

The health centres of Andalus, Kateer Balla, Arafa, and Um Jar town received 40 new cases in total on Saturday. The Um Jar Hospital admitted 13 new cases on Friday.

In the 20 villages in the area of Um Jar, located between Ad Duwaym and Rabak, at least 200 people are afflicted as well. According to the sources, Unicef has sent medical equipment, vaccines and medicines to the Um Jar Hospital, together with a team to conduct a field survey...

Sudan: Cholera Appears in North Kordofan Capital

El Obeid / Kosti ? Cases of cholera have appeared in the state capital of North Kordofan for the first time. The disease is spreading rapidly in White Nile state, where seven people died in the capital on Saturday.

The hospital in El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan, received 38 cases of cholera by the state health authorities. A medical source told Radio Dabanga that cholera infections appeared in El Obeid starting two days ago. Five new cases that emerged in Karima district were transferred to the hospital, while thirteen patients were transferred from El Wehda district...

Sudan: Cholera Spreads Amid Govt Denial

Eastern Sudan ? Cholera continues to spread in Sudan's eastern states, with more fatalities and infections reported across White Nile state, North Kordofan and Sennar. The federal authorities are beginning to respond, however Khartoum continues to refer to the outbreak as 'acute watery diarrhoea'.

The official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reports that Sudan's First Vice-President and National Prime Minister, Lt. Gen. Bakri Hassan Salih, has given a directive to provide "all necessary means for containing the watery diarrhoea cases in the White Nile state through urgent and effective interventions".

Salih met with Minister of State for Health, Dr Ferdos Abdulrahman at the Republican Palace on Wednesday to discuss health situations in the country and in the White Nile in particular and efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health in this connection...

South Sudan records 248 deaths from cholera since June, 2016

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Operations in Southern Sudan said 248 death cases of cholera had been reported in the country since its official outbreak in June 2016 out of the 8,160 cases reported in more than 19 provinces.

"Most of the casualties were confined to areas adjacent to the Nile River at the beginning of its deployment in June 2016, but in the last four weeks new cases have begun to appear in remote areas of the Nile, demonstrating the increased rate and rapid spread of cholera in Southern Sudan," the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Operations (OCHA) said in a statement on Monday.


According to the statement, 70 percent of the cases focused on people under the age of thirty years.
The outbreak of cholera this year is the largest and most deadly of people in terms of length of time since the country's independence, "the UN office said.

Cases of cholera or in officialese, watery diarrhea in Sudan have increased in White Nile State with 75 deaths, and 4,188 infections, the state?s governor said Tuesday.

?The number of infection cases with cholera, since the disease?s appearance on April 8 this year, has reached 4,188 cases, including 75 death cases,? Abdul-Hameed Musa Kasha, Governor of White Nile State, said when addressing the state?s legislative council Tuesday.

Meanwhile, social media activists published photos and information, which said were authentic, on cases of cholera in some hospitals in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The Sudanese health authorities have not yet published any indicators on the spread of the disease, its causes or the number of the people infected.

Khartoum State?s Minister of Health Mamoun Humaida, in a telephone conversation with Xinhua, declined to give any information about the disease...

Sudan?s cholera epidemic: ?14,659 infected, 292 dead?

On Thursday, Sudan?s Health Minister Bahar Idris Abugarda briefed the parliament about the spread of the ?acute water diarrhoea? epidemic in the country. New cholera cases were reported in the country?s capital, White Nile state, and North Kordofan.

The Minister told the parliament in a session organised by the Committee on Health, Environment, and Population, that between August 2016 and May 2017 the Ministry recorded 14,659 people infected with watery diarrhoea. 292 patients died.

The Sudanese health authorities still refer to ?watery diarrhoea? cases, though Sudanese medics have confirmed that the disease is cholera. Mentioning the infectious disease by its real name is not allowed in Sudan.

Cholera kills eight in two days across Sudan

Eight people have reportedly died and 231 others infected with cholera in Sudan?s Khartoum, White Nile, South Kordofan, and North Kordofan states on Monday and Tuesday.

Dr Ali Bashir, the spokesman for the National Epidemiology Corporation told Radio Dabanga that in Khartoum three people died at Bashayer hospital while three more died at El Sheikh El Bashir village in Jebel Awliya in southern Khartoum state.
