Fears as 90 people die of mysterious illness in Jonglei's Fangak County

Fear has gripped Fangak County of South Sudan's Jonglei State after officials and locals reported about 90 deaths from a mysterious illness since October.

The county commissioner Boutrus Biel told Radio Tamazuj that victims present with chest pains, vomiting, and diarrhea before succumbing.

“People are dying in Fangak County. It started on October 2 in the county headquarters, New Fangak town, and also the surrounding villages. So far, we lost 90 people especially the elderly and children after experiencing heart pains, vomiting, and diarrhea,” Biel said.

The commissioner says they suspect it is a waterborne disease linked to an oil spill in the county and called on the national government to urgently intervene.

The Ministry of health has today Wednesday deployed a rapid response medical team to investigate circumstances under which nearly 100 people in Fangak area of Jonglei State died.

Last week, the county commissioner appealed for the intervention of health authorities to investigate the outbreak of the strange disease in the area.

Biel Boutros said the unknown illness has so far claimed the lives of 90 people in the county since October.

The symptoms of the disease include diarrhea, high fever, joint pains, vomiting, body weakness, and loss of appetite.

A local health official said initial samples collected in the area returned negative test results for cholera.

"We decided to send a rapid response team to go and do risk assessment and investigation; that is when they will be able to collect samples from the sick people – but provisionally the figure that we got was that there were 89 deaths,” WHO’s Sheila Baya told the BBC.

Deaths have mostly been reported among the elderly and children ages 1 to 14, according to a statement from South Sudan’s Ministry of Health.

The symptoms of the mysterious illness include cough, diarrhea, fever, headache, chest pain, joint pain, loss of appetite and body weakness, officials said.

Biel said the WHO team that traveled to Fangak has since left, but did not communicate their findings to local officials.

The Ministry of Health and its partners have confirmed that an unknown disease that killed 89 people in Fangak County in Jonglei State was malaria.

The victims presented symptoms which included vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever before their death.

The confirmation was issued by the national and state ministries of health and the World Health Organization.
