S. Korea confirms additional FMD cases near Seoul

SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed additional cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Saturday at three pig farms in cities just outside of Seoul, indicating a failure of nationwide quarantine efforts to contain the highly contagious animal disease.

The additional cases now brought to 102 the number of confirmed FMD cases in the country that reported the first confirmed case in the latest outbreak on Nov. 29...

...The three latest cases were confirmed at pig farms in Pyeongtaek, Yongin and Anseong, all in Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds the capital Seoul.

Five other suspected cases have been reported at pig and cow farms throughout the nation, including the eastern Gangong Province and the central North Chungcheong Province, according to the ministry...

S. Korea confirms additional FMD cases amid expanded vaccination
SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported additional cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) on Sunday despite nationwide efforts to prevent the highly contagious animal illness from spreading further.

FMD cases were reported at a pig farm in Bongwha in the southeastern part of the country and at other farms in North Chungcheong and Gangwon provinces, which are located south and east of Seoul, respectively, according to the agriculture ministry.

The additional cases brought the number of confirmed FMD cases in the country to 115 after the first outbreak was reported in late November. The outbreak has been spreading fast despite the government's intensifying efforts at containment...

South Korea buries 1.4m pigs ALIVE in bid to eradicate foot and mouth disease

South Korea has buried 1.4million pigs alive after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease on the peninsula.

The controversial measure has been brought in after 115 cases of the disease were confirmed, originating in the city of Andong.

SEOUL, South Korea ? Hundreds of South Korean Buddhist monks and believers offered prayers Wednesday for more than 1.93 million cows, pigs and other animals that have been put to death in the country's worst outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

The Buddhists endured subfreezing temperatures to hold the rite at Jogye Temple, the headquarters of the Jogye Order, South Korea's largest Buddhist sect.

Some monks clad in grey and saffron robes offered white chrysanthemums ? a traditional Korean symbol of grief ? and bowed in front of photos of animals inside the temple in central Seoul.

They also bowed toward two big golden statues of Buddha and chanted sutras before circling around a pagoda and burning mortuary tablets and incense.

The animals ? mostly pigs ? have been killed in an attempt to halt the outbreak, which was reported in November, according to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.

One million doses of FMD vaccine for South Korea

At the request of the South Korean government, the Netherlands will send one million doses of FMD vaccine (type O-1-
Manisa) to South Korea. The country is currently affected by a serious FMD
crisis. The first 500,000 doses to arrive next week, the next tranche of 500,000
vaccines can be delivered four days later.

Belgium gives 800,000 doses of FMD vaccine to South Korea

South Korea has asked a few countries to donate emergency vaccinations against foot and mouth disease, the disease that currently threats the South Korean livestock sector.

One of the countries that responded to the question to donate vaccinations is Belgium. The country donated 800,000 doses to help get the FMD epidemic under control and to get the swine health status of South Korea back on track.

Seoul Zoo tries to protect animals from outbreaks

Zookeepers in South Korea are trying to protect their animals from foot-and-mouth disease and bird flu, which are wreaking havoc among the country's livestock.

Seoul Zoo, on the outskirts of the capital, reopened on Wednesday after having closed its doors since New Year's Day.
The zoo has vaccinated about 600 animals susceptible to foot-and-mouth disease and is keeping giraffes and hippos indoors....

SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has confirmed three additional cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) during the Lunar New Year's holiday, the government said Saturday, a lower-than-expected number of outbreaks given initial fears that hometown visitors could widely spread the virus...

...On Saturday, the state-run Department of Animal Resources Development in the central city of Cheonan reported a suspected outbreak of the disease at a farm it runs there. The farm has about 350 dairy cows, 1,650 pigs, 11,800 chickens and 1,630 ducks and five horses.

Thirteen pigs at the farm, which showed FMD symptoms, have been destroyed and the farm has been shut down, officials said. Test results are expected to come as early as Sunday, officials said.

The three confirmed cases came in the central town of Hongseong, the southeastern city of Gyeongsan and the eastern coastal town of Uljin. They brought the total number of FMD outbreaks to 144, the agriculture ministry said...

Cases of foot-and-mouth disease were confirmed Tuesday in the country?s fifth-largest city of Daejeon despite vaccinations in the region, stoking fears over a recurrence of a disease whose spread had thought to have been halted.

The Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said a close inspection confirmed additional cases of the disease at a pig farm in the city?s Dong district. Before the latest outbreak, a pig farm in Busan?s Saha district had been the last to be affected by the disease Monday last week.

Pigs in the affected farm in Daejeon were vaccinated on Jan. 30 and Feb. 5. On the outbreak of the disease despite the vaccination, the ministry said, ?Vaccination doesn?t guarantee complete immunization against the disease,? adding, ?Given that suspicious symptoms were found several days ago, we judged that the virus came from affected areas nearby such as those in South Chungcheong Province. Epidemiological studies are underway...?

S. Korea's FMD outbreak to subside by early March: minister

SEOUL, Feb. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's severest foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak is expected to come under control by early March as nationwide vaccination efforts take effect, a senior policymaker said Friday.

In a radio interview with a local broadcaster, Farm Minister Yoo Jeong-bok said the number of FMD cases has started to fall off in recent weeks after the first round of nationwide vaccinations have been completed on all cattle and pigs.

After the first case was reported in late November, Seoul officially confirmed a total of 147 cases in six provinces and four major cities across the country, with 3.37 million pigs, cows, goats and deer being culled and buried so far at a cost exceeding 2 trillion won (US$1.8 billion)...

JEONGCHIRI, South Korea, Feb. 18 (Yonhap) -- More than 140 cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have been confirmed nationwide in South Korea and millions of cows and pigs have been culled, but Lim Kang-soo never believed his cows could fall victim to this highly contagious animal disease.

Lim, a resident of Jeongchiri near Gongju in South Chungcheong Province, confidently invested his life savings into a small cow farm, believing in its notoriously strict vaccination policies -- until eight of his cattle tested positive for FMD last month.

"We sterilized ourselves head to toe whenever we stepped in and out of the shed," Lim said.?Our village is tucked away deep in the hills, 60 kilometers away from the closest FMD case. How could this have happened??
An independent investigation, commissioned by the Icheon municipality west of Seoul and released last week, gave weight to the argument that transmission by air and not direct contact might have been the primary force behind the rapid spread of the lethal airborne virus...

Seoul confirms fresh foot-and-mouth outbreak

The government confirmed a new case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) at a pig farm in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, Sunday ― the first since last month when the authorities declared a nationwide outbreak over.

The farm in Yeongcheon, 344 kilometers southeast of Seoul, reported to quarantine authorities that six pigs out of 67 showed symptoms of the highly contagious FMD, Saturday. The authorities ordered the farm to cull the contaminated pigs, and halted all movement of any animals outside the farm, as well as disinfecting all buildings and related facilities.

The authorities were looking into the cause of the outbreak but said the additional outbreak will not result in the wide spread of the disease...

S. Korea confirms additional FMD case

SEOUL, April 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported its third outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) this month on Friday, raising concerns that the highly contagious animal illness may be spreading despite nationwide vaccinations.

The farm ministry said piglets at a farm in Yeongcheon, 344 kilometers southeast of Seoul, tested positive for the highly contagious animal disease after showing symptoms such as blisters on the snout, hooves and teats.

It said the farm, which raised 800 pigs had been under quarantine as of Thursday, with all movement of animals barred.

"Because all pigs have been given vaccine shots and should have developed resistance to the disease, only animals affected will be culled and buried, with others to be kept under close observation," a government official said.

He added that quarantine officials plan to check for other sick livestock within a 500 meter radius of the farm.

The latest outbreak took place just 2.5 kilometers from a pig farm where animals tested positive for FMD on Sunday. This was followed by a second case on Wednesday...
