Three more cattle farms in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, were found to have been infected with the deadly foot-and-mouth disease Thursday, sparking fears that livestock farms in other parts of the country could be hit by the highly contagious virus soon.

On Monday, the disease was first detected on two pig farms in Andong, about half a year after the last epidemic broke out in Korea. A cattle farm in the area also fell victim to the animal disease the following day...

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is spreading at an alarming rate, with the number of infected farms increasing to 30 and with more than 88,000 animals slaughtered as of yesterday, according to government officials.

All of the infected farms are still in North Gyeongsang. Health officials, nonetheless, are beefing up quarantine measures as a precaution.

Meanwhile, suspicious cases of FMD that were reported on Sunday in Daegu, 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the initial outbreak area and Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang, 112 kilometers away, turned out to be negative.

The area of concern still remains within a 30-kilometer radius of the epicenter - near Andong - with Yecheon, North Gyeongsang, marking the farthest spot the outbreak has reached, at 29 kilometers from the epicenter.

Another farm in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang, reported symptoms of the disease in its cattle yesterday. The farm is about 30 kilometers from the epicenter.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has set up 298 quarantine posts nationwide, including 180 posts in Andong and its outskirts. As a precaution, the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service has secured vaccines for 300,000 livestock, while requesting raw materials for 3 million more vaccines from a U.K. pharmaceutical company.

The government, though, is trying to refrain from using the vaccine, because it would lose its FMD-free status from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) for at least a year.

The country lost its FMD-free status on Nov. 29 because of the confirmed FMD cases.

South Korea employed the FMD vaccine in April 2000, when the virus first appeared in the country, and it took a more than a year to regain its FMD-free status.

Sohn Han-mo, an official at the national veterinary service, said the export of animal products will be badly hurt if the vaccine is used.

SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed an additional case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) at a cow farm north of Seoul Thursday, one day after it reported its first case outside of a southeastern province where the latest outbreak was first reported.

The latest outbreak was reported on Nov. 29 at two pig farms in Andong, a city located some 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul in North Gyeongsang Province.

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed an additional case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Sunday at a cow farm north of Seoul, indicating further spread of the animal disease that has now widely breached a quarantine line set over 200 kilometers south of the capital.

The latest case was found at a farm in Paju, a city located just south of the border between South and North Korea.

S.Korea raises foot-and-mouth alert to top level

South Korea has raised its foot-and-mouth disease alert to the highest level to deal with an outbreak that is now spreading among livestock across the country.
It has so far culled 520,000 cows and pigs, or about 4 percent of its farm animal population.

The South Korean government set up a task force on Wednesday to handle the crisis and called for intensified anti-infection measures.
All livestock farms in the country will be thoroughly disinfected, and movements to and from them will be restricted.
Year-end events across the country, including fireworks displays, have been cancelled out of fear the disease will be further spread by the shoe soles of spectators.

South Korea's foot-and-mouth outbreak was confirmed in late November in pigs on a farm in the southern city of Andong.
Authorities have started vaccinating cattle in the suburbs of Seoul and elsewhere. They've also shut down some livestock markets.

Japan's agriculture ministry is stepping up quarantine at airports to prevent any possible entry of foot-and-mouth disease from South Korea.

SEOUL, Jan. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed two additional foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks on Saturday, despite nationwide quarantine efforts to contain the spread of the highly contagious animal disease.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said cattle at farms in North Gyeongsang Province in the country's southeastern region and Gangwon Province on the east coast tested positive for FMD.
All 97 animals at the farms have been ordered culled and buried to prevent the spread of FMD, the ministry said, with livestock within a 500-meter radius of the outbreaks to be destroyed as a precautionary measure.
The animals had been quarantined as of Friday after some started to show symptoms, like excessive drooling, blisters on nipples and loss of appetite.

The latest tally came after the first outbreak was confirmed in Andong, 270 kilometers from Seoul, on Nov. 29 and is the severest outbreak in the country's history.
Seoul reported a total of 67 cases and several others that are not included in the official FMD tally because the animals were destroyed before tests results were verified in four provinces and the city of Incheon, west of Seoul.
More than 643,000 animals have been ordered culled and the vaccination of 361,000 animals at 14,000 farms across the country are under way to stem the spread with losses estimated at well over 520 billion won (US$463 million).

The country was hit by the disease in 2000, 2002 and two more times earlier this year.
Reflecting the grave situation, Seoul announced on Dec. 22 that it would start vaccinating cattle and upgraded the country's quarantine alert level to "red" -- the highest in a four-tier response scale. A central crisis management headquarters has also been set up.

FMD is highly contagious and affects all cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle, pigs, deer, goats and buffalo, although it is harmless to humans. It is classified as a "List A" disease by the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health.

The South Chungcheong provincial government said two milk cows at a farm in the central city of Cheonan, 92 kilometers south of Seoul, have tested positive for FMD.

All 50 animals at the dairy farm have been ordered culled and buried to prevent the spread of FMD, the regional government said, with livestock within a 10km radius of the outbreak not to be moved as a precautionary measure.

A beef cattle farm in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, just southwest of Seoul, was also affected by the animal epidemic, raising fears over potential contagion in Seoul and its vicinity.

All 74 beef cows at the farm were ordered to be destroyed and movement of livestock in or out of the area was prohibited, the FMD control center of Gyeonggi Province said.

Another beef cattle farm in Gangwon Province also tested positive for the contagious disease.

FMD spreads through central S. Korea

SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has continued to spread through the central part of the country despite nationwide quarantine efforts, the government said Monday.

The farm ministry said a pig farm in Boryeong, 170 kilometers southwest of Seoul, tested positive for FMD, along with a cattle farm in Chuncheon, east of the capital city.

The outbreak in Boryeong marks the third time that the central province has reported an outbreak after the first case was confirmed there over the weekend...

A net importer of beef, pork and chicken, South Korea is also fighting against rising cases of bird flu.

Hundreds of thousands of authorities have been working day and night to slaughter the animals, and vaccinating more than 1.2 million animals, mostly cattle, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

The outbreaks since last November have led prices of beef and pork to climb in South Korea and might lead to more imports of beef from the United States, Australia and New Zealand.....
