(8th LD) S. Korea on high alert after 1st African swine fever case confirmed

All Headlines 18:25 September 17, 2019

By Kim Kwang-tae

SEJONG/SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea was on alert Tuesday to prevent the spread of African swine fever after the first case of the animal disease was confirmed near the border with North Korea.

The agriculture ministry announced the beginning of operations to slaughter some 4,000 pigs as a precautionary step.

Kim Hyeon-soo, minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs, said quarantine officials are set to complete the culling of the pigs at three farms, including the one where the disease was detected, in Paju, just south of the inter-Korean border, by Tuesday.
...
Later in the day, a pig farm in Yeoncheon reported a suspected case of African swine fever, the ministry said. The county near the border with North Korea is located about 48 kilometers away from Paju, where the disease broke out.

The farm, which is raising some 2,000 pigs, reported that one of its pigs died for an unknown reason in the afternoon. An examination is being carried out to determine whether the pig was infected, the ministry said.

[h=1]South Korea Reports 2 More Suspected Swine Fever Cases[/h] SEOUL - South Korean officials are investigating two more suspected cases of African swine fever from farms near its border with North Korea, as fears grow over the spread of the illness that has decimated pig herds across Asia.
An agriculture ministry official said Friday that officials are testing samples of dead pigs from two farms in Paju city that are about 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) away from a farm where the country?s first case of the disease was confirmed Monday. A second case was confirmed Tuesday in the nearby town of Yeoncheon.
South Korea has stepped up efforts to contain the disease, which may have crossed from North Korea, which reported an outbreak in May.
Workers had culled some 10,400 pigs at border area farms as of Friday morning.

Another African swine fever case confirmed in S. Korea

By Kang Yoon-seung

SEJONG, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea on Monday confirmed the third case of African swine fever (ASF) in the country, sparking concerns over the nationwide spread of the deadly animal disease.

A suspected case was reported earlier in the day at a farm in Gimpo, just 30 kilometers west of Seoul, and the case resulted in a positive test for the highly contagious disease. It was the first confirmed case reported south of the Han River, which runs through the South Korean capital.

South Korea's first-ever confirmed case of ASF was reported in Paju, located near the border with North Korea, on Tuesday. The second case was reported the following day in neighboring Yeoncheon.

South Korea's agricultural ministry said it also received another report on a suspected case in Paju late Monday. It said quarantine officials were immediately dispatched to gather samples from the Paju farm.

If the samples test positive, it would mark the fourth confirmed case of ASF in South Korea.

All confirmed or suspected cases so far came from northern areas of Gyeonggi Province, adjacent with the inter-Korean border. Two suspected cases of ASF were reported in Paju on Friday, then later tested negative.

By Kang Yoon-seung

SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Yonhap) -- Another suspected case of African swine fever (ASF) was reported south of Seoul on Monday, amid continued quarantine efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

The report was made in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, about 42.5 kilometers south of the capital. If confirmed, it will be the tenth case since Sept. 17, when the country's first-ever outbreak of African swine fever was confirmed, and will be the first to occur south of Seoul. The test result is expected to be released early Tuesday.

By Kang Yoon-seung

SEOUL, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed two more cases of African swine fever (ASF) on Wednesday, raising the number of disease outbreaks to 11 in just two weeks amid strenuous disinfection efforts across the country.

After a lull for the past four days, the new ASF cases were reported in Paju, north Gyeonggi Province, bordering North Korea, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The ministry said it is testing two suspected ASF cases that were reported, one in Paju and one in Gimpo, west of Seoul.

Of the confirmed cases, five have been from Ganghwa Island, northwest of Seoul, and four from Paju, where the country's first-ever highly contagious disease broke out.

So far, all confirmed cases have been reported in areas adjacent to the border with North Korea. Suspected cases from south of Seoul have all tested negative.

(LEAD) S. Korea on alert over potential spread of swine fever via wild boars

All Headlines 18:23 October 13, 2019
...

SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's quarantine authorities remained alert on Sunday over the potential nationwide spread of African swine fever (ASF) after wild boars were found dead with traces of the disease north of Seoul.

The quarantine authorities said Saturday two wild boars, found dead in Cheorwon, 90 kilometers north of Seoul and bordering North Korea, tested positive for the deadly animal disease, marking the first time traces of ASF had been found in Gangwon Province.

On Sunday, two more wild boars found dead in the area tested positive for the disease. Since the first such case was reported earlier this month from a town near the inter-Korean border, Sunday's discovery raised the number of dead wild boar with traces of the disease to five.
