The number of South Korean poultry farms confirmed to be infected with highly-pathogenic strain of avian influenza(AI) is close to reaching 100.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said birds in two farms in Icheon and Anseong in Gyeonggi Province and farms in Yangpyeong and Pyeongtaek tested positive for the H5N6 strain of avian influenza(AI).

The ministry Wednesday received reports of additional suspected bird flu cases from farms in Yeoju and Anseong in Gyeonggi Province and Naju in South Jeolla Province.

Quarantine officials said that as of Thursday morning, 33 out of 43 suspected cases tested positive for bird flu. Officials believe the rest could be confirmed soon.

So far, North Chungcheong Province has seen ten confirmed cases of bird flu, Gyeonggi Province eleven, South Chungcheong Province five, South Jeolla Province four, North Jeolla Province one and Sejong City two.

Roughly five-point-eight million birds have been culled so far in 161 farms, some of them as a preventive measure. An additional one-point-nine million birds are expected to be culled soon.
