SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- A medical doctor who works for a large general hospital in Seoul was isolated at a public hospital in the capital city, suspected of being infected with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), government officials said Wednesday.

"We're examining his genetic samples to determine exactly whether he has contracted MERS as he showed symptoms of the disease, including a high fever," a health ministry official said, on condition of anonymity.

The official, however, did not give the name of the two hospitals.

The doctor is believed to been infected with the deadly respiratory virus when he came into contact with the nation's 14th MERS patient at the hospital where he works.

"The doctor was later moved to a state-designated hospital for isolating suspected MERS patients in Seoul," the official said, adding that the test result will be out as early as Thursday.

If the infection is confirmed, he would be the country's fourth case of a third-hand contraction of the virus.

I agree. He is confirmed now via the MoH report (which was published several hours after the media report).
 
I think the media report in post #3 is incorrect about the number of tertiary cases. I believe the doctor is the 5th tertiary case. I believe the tertiary cases are:


23) #1190 - Male, 73, reported by media as hospital roommate of case # 1181, South Korea

24) #1191 - Male, 78, reported by media as hospital roommate of case #1181, South Korea

30) #1197 - Male, 60, nosocomial, hospital roommate of case #1181, South Korea

31) #1200 - Male, 69, nosocomial, patient in same ward as case #1181, South Korea

35) #1204 - Male, 38, nosocomial, medical staff, contact with case #1173, South Korea


Case #1181 referred to above is the 16th Korean case and was a secondary case because he was infected after exposure to the 1st Korean case (#1149).

Case #1173 referred to above is the 14th Korean case and was a secondary case because he was infected after exposure to the 1st Korean case (#1149).

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday, the 35th confirmed MERS patient, a doctor at a Seoul-based hospital, was found to have visited a large-scale conference to attend several meetings and symposiums in Seoul, despite instructions from authorities to quarantine himself, potentially exposing the more than 1,400 people in attendance.

?Concerns are growing as this means that the central control tower to combat MERS collapsed,? said an official from the municipal government.
