S. Korea confirms 12 MERS cases as fears over outbreak spread

May 30, 2015, 12:00 am TWN

SEOUL -- South Korea confirmed five more MERS cases Friday, bringing the total number of patients infected with the potentially deadly virus to 12, including a man who defied a quarantine protocol and traveled to China, health officials said.

The infections were all traced to the original case of a 68-year-old man diagnosed on May 20 after returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The health ministry said the new MERS cases included a 30-year-old nurse from the hospital where the original case was reported, and a 56-year-old man who was treated there for other diseases.

A 44-year-old man who left for China on a business trip on Tuesday, a day after his father was diagnosed with the virus, was confirmed Friday to have been infected, it said.

The man ignored a warning from doctors advising against travel and is now at a hospital in China. A list of 45 people, including colleagues and passengers who had sat close to him on the Hong Kong-bound flight, has been drawn up.

The man later traveled from Hong Kong to the nearby Chinese city of Huizhou by bus.

Earlier in the day, a 30-year-old female nurse who treated the first Korean MERS patient tested positive for MERS, as did a 56-year-old man who shared a hospital ward with the patient, the MW said.

Both were directly infected by the 68-year-old patient zero, who was diagnosed May 20.

The nurse had initially tested negative for the virus, but was confirmed to be infected upon a retest.
