South Dakota reports first death from flu

A Hutchinson County resident in his or her 80s is South Dakota's first influenza death of the season, the state Department of Health reported.

To protect patient confidentiality, the state does not release other information about the person.

Flu activity in South Dakota increased to "widespread" status earlier this week, said Dr. Lon Kightlinger, state epidemiologist. The state has reported 144 lab-confirmed cases of influenza and 48 flu-related hospitalizations...

Three South Dakotans have died from a flu outbreak that worsened during the past week, pushing the number of confirmed cases to nearly 300.

Two of the people who died were from Minnehaha County and one was from Hutchinson County. Two of them were over 65 and one was a 40-year-old Hartford man.

Influenza-related deaths increase to 23 in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. The number of influenza-related deaths in South Dakota has increased to 23 during the current season.

State Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger tells KELO-TV (http://bit.ly/1GK5rem ) that three deaths occurred last week. More than 400 people have been hospitalized because of the virus throughout the season...
