South Dakota reports first two flu deaths of 2025-26 season; cases, hospitalizations rising statewide

The South Dakota Department of Health says the first two influenza-related deaths of the 2025-26 season have been reported in Minnehaha County as lab-confirmed cases and hospitalizations increase statewide.

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The South Dakota Department of Health reported the first two influenza-related deaths of the 2025-26 flu season, both Minnehaha County residents in the older-than-64 age group.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Joshua Clayton said flu activity is increasing across South Dakota, with 2,824 lab-confirmed cases and 154 hospitalizations reported so far this season. The department said South Dakota averages about 40 influenza deaths each year.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Four new flu deaths have been reported in Sioux Falls, according to the South Dakota Department of Health​
There have been 595 total cases reported for the year 2026, and a total of six confirmed deaths due to influenza.

All six cases that resulted in death were in the age demographic above the age of 64. Four of the five cases resulting in death were in Minnehaha County, with one case in Lincoln County and one case in Meade County.
