State reports first measles case since 97

PIERRE ? An unvaccinated child is South Dakota?s first case of measles since 1997, a state health official announced today. The child is a Davison County resident under the age of 5.

?South Dakota has good immunization coverage rates but measles is on the rise nationally which means unvaccinated individuals are at risk for exposure when they travel to areas with cases,? said Dr. Lon Kightlinger, state epidemiologist for the Department of Health. ?Up to date immunizations are the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the measles. We strongly encourage South Dakotans to check their immunization records and make sure they?re up to date.?

Kightlinger said the department is working to identify those who may have been exposed to the case...

(PIERRE)-(AP) - Three more South Dakota residents have been diagnosed with measles, increasing the number of cases to nine.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Lon Kightlinger says all cases have been reported in Davison County. The cases involve five adults and four children and their ages range from 19 months old to 41 years old. None of the individuals had previously been vaccinated against the virus...

PIERRE, SD (KELO AM) ? An unvaccinated Sioux Falls child under the age of 10 has been reported with measles, the Department of Health said today. The investigation is still underway but the case has no travel history and is not known to be connected with the measles outbreak in Mitchell that totals 13 cases.

Individuals who were at Holy Spirit Elementary School in Sioux Falls on Jan. 22 may have been exposed and are urged to check their immunization records. For those in need of vaccination, the state Department of Health and the Sioux Falls City Health Department have scheduled a free vaccine clinic from noon to 4 p.m. at the City Health Department, 521 N. Main Ave. No appointment is needed...
