COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) said Thursday that the first flu-associated death of the season had been confirmed in the state.

"Sadly, an individual from the Upstate region has died from complications due to the flu, our first lab-confirmed, influenza-associated death of the season,” said Linda Bell, M.D., State Epidemiologist and DHEC’s Director of the Bureau of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control, in a news release.

The flu season is off to a strong start in South Carolina, with public health officials reporting the highest number of cases for this time of year in at least five years.

The latest influenza report from the Department of Health and Environmental Control shows cases of the virus increasing around the state. A fourth flu-related death was reported during the last week of November.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — State health officials say another person has died from the flu in South Carolina for the current season.

The latest information from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) show a person over the age of 65 died between December 1 and December 7. Due to privacy rules, health officials could not release more information about how the person died.

Cases of the flu are increasing across South Carolina faster than the state has seen in recent years for this early in the season, public health officials said.

The state reported the 10th flu-related death of the year in the most recent report on the virus from the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

In the latest report, DHEC said 96 people were hospitalized due to the flu.

During this flu season, 11 people have died in the state. Most of them have been 65 or older, but the most recent death was a person between 18 and 49.
