Many SC vultures found dead with bird flu, health officials warn. Here’s what we know
By Patrick McCreless Updated May 27, 2022 2:40 PM

A mass die-off of wild vultures, some of which tested positive for avian influenza, was recently found in Charleston County.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is urging the public to make sure their pets and domestic animals avoid contact with dead or sick vultures, other birds and wild animals. DHEC also recommends that residents avoid areas where dead birds have been found...

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCBD) — South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has confirmed that some dead vultures found in a West Ashley neighborhood tested positive for a highly pathogenic avian flu.

Dore Carlo originally found dozens of the dead vultures near two retention ponds behind his home on May 7.

“We had friends come over, who had a golf cart, and we took a ride back here and saw dozens of dead ones,” Carlo recalled.

He reported it to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), which took samples from the birds on May 10.

“DHEC advised me to get the word out best I could to keep children and pets away from the area,” Carlo said...

...Almost a month after the dead vultures were first reported, Carlo said they are still losing two or three vultures a day, and more than 20 carcasses still sit in the neighborhood.

Now, he wants to know who will get rid of all the carcasses surrounding the retention ponds where people walk their dogs and children play.

“There’s other diseases I’m sure will come along from all these dead birds, not to mention they are bringing other animals around that would be feeding off of them,” said Carlo.

Both SCDNR and DHEC said there is nothing they can do to remove the dead birds...

SC wood duck die-offs linked to highly pathogenic Avian Influenza
by Brandi MartinTue, December 26th 2023

(WPDE) — The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has reported an increase in calls concerning an apparent die-off of wood ducks in Clarendon, Colleton, and Williamsburg counties.

Preliminary testing indicates two of these die-off events can be attributed to highly pathogenic Eurasian H5 avian influenza. Results are pending from additional die-off locations...

Public Health Notice: Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Awareness

Newsroom Posted on October 20, 2026

The Town of Mount Pleasant has received several reports of sick or deceased birds throughout the community over the past week, including a report this morning involving multiple birds at the Meridian. Some deceased birds have been sent for testing through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) to determine whether avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, may be present.

With seasonal bird migration underway, we want to remind residents to be aware of the potential risks associated with avian influenza. While the presence of dead birds does not necessarily indicate bird flu, the virus can spread more readily during migration season.

Although the risk to dogs is considered low, avian influenza can affect other animals and, in some cases, humans. Residents who keep backyard poultry should be especially cautious.

To help protect yourself, your pets and local wildlife, please take the following precautions:
  • Avoid contact with dead or visibly sick birds.
  • Keep pets away from dead birds and other wildlife that may be ill.
  • Do not allow pets to eat or come into contact with deceased wildlife.
  • Monitor backyard poultry for signs of illness and follow guidance from state animal health officials.
  • Report sightings of dead or sick birds to Mount Pleasant Animal Control by calling (843) 743-7200. Please do not attempt to handle or remove them yourself.
The Town is coordinating with appropriate state agencies and will continue to monitor the situation and share additional information as test results become available.

Thank you for helping us protect our community, pets and local wildlife.
