Charleston-area patients tested for the Zika virus

A maternal and fetal physician for Roper St. Francis said three of his pregnant patients have undergone testing for the Zika virus ? a mosquito-borne disease that may cause severe, even fatal, birth defects and is ?spreading explosively? throughout the Americas.

The blood samples were sent to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and then to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.

Dr. Christopher Robinson said the women may have been exposed to the Zika virus during recent travel. He anticipates it will take two weeks for the CDC to process his patients? samples.
