TUESDAY MEASLES UPDATE: DPH Reports 89 New Measles Cases in Upstate, Bringing Outbreak total to 789, Additional School Exposures

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting 89 new cases of measles in the state since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 789.

There are currently 557 people in quarantine and 20 in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is Feb. 19.

Based on the new cases, DPH has identified public exposures at the following schools: Dorman High, Inman Intermediate, and New Prospect Elementary. The number of students from these schools to be quarantined is still being determined.

Additionally, students remain in quarantine from the following schools: Holly Springs-Motlow Elementary (59 students in quarantine), Campobello Gramling School (46 students in quarantine), Libertas Academy (28 students in quarantine), Cooley Springs-Fingerville Elementary (22 students in quarantine), Crestview Elementary (22 students in quarantine), Boiling Springs Elementary (21 students in quarantine), Starr Elementary (17 students in quarantine), Sugar Ridge Elementary (17 students in quarantine), Fairforest Elementary (13 students in quarantine), Berry Shoals Elementary (13 students in quarantine), Rainbow Lake Middle (12 students in quarantine), Global Academy (11 students in quarantine), Boiling Springs High (11 students in quarantine), Mayo Elementary (8 students in quarantine), Cannons Elementary (8 students in quarantine), Abner Creek Middle (7 students in quarantine), Landrum High (6 students in quarantine), Oakland Elementary (6 students in quarantine), Mabry Middle (6 students in quarantine) and Chapman High (fewer than 5 students in quarantine).​..

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting 58 new cases of measles in the state since Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 847.

There are currently 443 people in quarantine and 20 in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is Feb. 24.

Based on the new cases, DPH has identified public exposures at one additional school: Lyman Elementary (students in quarantine to be determined).

Additionally, students remain in quarantine from the following schools: Holly Springs-Motlow Elementary (59 students in quarantine), Abner Creek Middle (35 students in quarantine), Libertas Academy (28 students in quarantine), New Prospect Elementary (25 students in quarantine), Inman Intermediate (22 students in quarantine), Cooley Springs-Fingerville Elementary (22 students in quarantine), Boiling Springs Elementary (21 students in quarantine), Global Academy (11 students in quarantine), Cannons Elementary (8 students in quarantine), Mayo Elementary (8 students in quarantine), Sugar Ridge Elementary (fewer than 5 students in quarantine), Chapman High (fewer than 5 students in quarantine).

DPH has identified an additional location that an individual visited while infectious with measles. DPH has defined the time of potential exposure to others at the following location: Burger King, 6196 US-221, Roebuck, S.C. on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. People who were exposed at Burger King, especially those without immunity through vaccination or previous disease, should monitor for symptoms through Feb. 18.​..

TUESDAY MEASLES UPDATE: DPH Reports 29 New Measles Cases, Bringing Outbreak total to 876; New Case in Pee Dee Region, Additional Public Exposures Identified

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting 29 new cases of measles in the state since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 876.

There are currently 354 people in quarantine and 22 in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is Feb. 24.

DPH has also confirmed a case of measles in a Sumter County resident. At this point in the investigation, it is not yet clear whether this new case is linked to the Upstate outbreak centered around Spartanburg County or if the case may have been exposed where measles is occurring in other locations.

DPH has identified numerous locations where exposures to infectious measles may have occurred. DPH has defined the times of potential exposure at the following locations:

Mariachis Mexican Restaurant at 1072 Broad Street, Sumter S.C. on Friday, Jan. 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

There are currently 277 people in quarantine and eight in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is March 2.

DPH has identified numerous locations where exposures to infectious measles may have occurred. DPH has defined the times of potential exposure at the following locations:

TUESDAY MEASLES UPDATE: DPH Reports 13 New Measles Cases, Bringing Outbreak total to 933, Case in Lancaster County and Upstate School Exposures

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Feb. 10, 2026

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting 13 new cases of measles in the state since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 933.

There are currently 235 people in quarantine and six in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is March 5.

DPH has also confirmed a case of measles in a Lancaster County resident. DPH is still investigating the source of exposure for this case. No public exposures related to this case have been identified in South Carolina. Visit the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Measles Dashboard for public exposures in North Carolina.

Based on the new cases, DPH has identified public exposures at the following schools: Libertas Academy (nine individuals in quarantine) and Inman Intermediate (fewer than five individuals in quarantine). Additionally, individuals remain in quarantine from Lyman Elementary School (23 individuals in quarantine).

Vaccination continues to be the best way to prevent measles and stop this outbreak. Vaccines are available at many primary care provider offices and pharmacies, as well as DPH Health Departments.

In response to the ongoing measles outbreak in the Upstate, DPH will activate its Mobile Health Unit to offer measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination to the public at no cost on:

Friday, Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 34 Blackstock Road, Inman
Tuesday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 570 Magnolia Street, Spartanburg

There are currently 186 people in quarantine and nine in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is March 8.

DPH has identified numerous locations where exposures to infectious measles may have occurred. DPH has defined the times of potential exposure at the following locations:

Itto Ramen Bar at 1807 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, S.C. on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
HomeGoods at 1125 Woodruff Road, Greenville, S.C. on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Children's Medical Center at 841 S. Buncombe Road, Greer, S.C. all day on Wednesday, Feb. 4 and Friday, Feb. 6.​

The risk of exposure in the locations is limited to the specific dates and times announced. Once that time frame has passed, the location is not an ongoing risk for measles exposure. Exposures occurred only when an infectious person was present during the defined time. These locations are not a source of ongoing exposure, and businesses and locations identified are not responsible for a person with measles having been present.

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting 12 new cases of measles in the state since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 962.

There are currently 127 people in quarantine and eight in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these is March 11.

Based on the new cases, DPH has identified public exposures at Libertas Academy (17 individuals in quarantine). Additionally, individuals remain in quarantine from Inman Intermediate (fewer than 5 individuals in quarantine).

DPH has one public exposure notification to report. DPH has defined the time of potential exposure at the following location: Walmart – Powdersville, 11410 Anderson Road, Greenville, S.C. on Sunday Feb. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m.

The risk of exposure in public exposure locations is limited to the specific dates and times announced. Once that time frame has passed, the location is not an ongoing risk for measles exposure. Exposures occurred only when an infectious person was present during the defined time. These locations are not a source of ongoing exposure, and businesses and locations identified are not responsible for a person with measles having been present.

People who were exposed at Walmart, especially those without immunity through vaccination or previous disease, should monitor for symptoms through March 1.

Complications are not reportable to DPH, but we have learned of 20 hospitalizations, including both adults and children, for complications of the disease since the beginning of the outbreak. Additional cases required medical care for measles but were not hospitalized. To protect privacy, DPH does not provide protected health information or any information that could identify persons.​..

Based on the new cases, DPH has identified public exposures at Mabry Middle School (number of individuals in quarantine to be determined). Additionally, individuals remain in quarantine from Libertas Academy (17 individuals in quarantine) and Inman Intermediate (fewer than 5 individuals in quarantine).

South Carolina’s 200-day measles outbreak is over. What it cost.

At nearly 1,000 cases, mostly in unvaccinated children, the South Carolina measles outbreak that officially ends today was one of the worst the United States has seen in nearly four decades.

While it garnered national notoriety, the outbreak that began Oct. 2 did not appear to alter daily life for many in the state, even in the epicenter of Spartanburg County. However, the true impact of the outbreak on the state — public health expenditures, lost income, disruptions in schools and changes in attitude toward vaccines — may be less obvious.

At 997 cases, the South Carolina outbreak is the largest since 2,000 cases in 1991 in New York City, according to an analysis by The Post and Courier. And it is clear who was most affected. Of those whose age and vaccination status were known, 95.3 percent were unvaccinated and 90.8 percent of cases were in children 17 years old and younger, the analysis found.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health said that the outbreak has cost the state at least $2 million in actual expenditures. Up to 90 people at a time were working on responding to and tracking down potential cases and those who were exposed to the highly contagious virus.

The cost to local schools was less clear, though officials across the Upstate described thousands of staff members and teachers scurrying to secure sometimes decades-old immunization records in preparation for an outbreak that ultimately stayed largely in Spartanburg County. Hundreds of unvaccinated children, meanwhile, missed weeks of in-person instruction when exposed to a sick schoolmate.

It had “significant impacts” on public health, said Dr. Brannon Traxler, deputy director of Health Promotion and Services & Chief Medical Officer.​..
