By Tom Corwin

South Carolina saw its fourth measles case in 2025, and residents could be at increasing risk during upcoming travel because of ongoing outbreaks in the U.S. and abroad, the state epidemiologist said.

“This is a concern because we're seeing now more cases in the last few months in South Carolina than we had previously seen in the last seven years,” said Dr. Linda Bell of the state Department of Public Health.

The fourth confirmed case, announced Sept. 26, is an Upstate resident who was unvaccinated and had no previous exposure to measles...

SPARTANBURG — Fairforest Elementary School and Global Academy are at the center of the Spartanburg County measles outbreak, the Department of Public Health said Oct. 8.

Fairforest Academy is part of Spartanburg County School District 6 and Global Academy is authorized by the Limestone Charter Association. The two schools are about a 10-minute drive from each other, both west of the city of Spartanburg.

DPH first announced an outbreak in a Spartanburg school on Oct. 7.

On Oct. 8, it said it had waited 48 hours for parents to be notified before it released the schools where the outbreak was occurring.

After DPH named both schools, Joe Chisolm with Global Academy told The Post and Courier that his school had one case of measles and that it had “taken immediate action by individually contacting all families whose children were identified as being in close contact with the confirmed case, ensuring a controlled and compliant response.”..

TUESDAY MEASLES UPDATE: DPH Increases Measles Case Count to 16 total in 2025, 12 related to Upstate Outbreak

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Oct. 14, 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is updating the number of confirmed measles cases in 2025 in South Carolina to 16 since July and 12 that are directly linked to an ongoing Spartanburg County outbreak. The five new cases are the result of individuals who were exposed in previously identified school settings and have been quarantining at home. Because they were quarantining before they became infectious, no additional exposures occurred with these new cases.

While the five cases may appear as a large increase, the successful early quarantining as a result of the identified exposure is a successful public health outcome that shows how mitigation efforts (quarantining if exposed) can make a huge difference in preventing community spread.

Additionally:

DPH is identifying Crunch Fitness’ location at 1332 S. Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville, S.C, as the source of a child’s exposure on Sept. 30 that was previously reported. DPH is asking anyone who was at that location on that day only between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to see their health care provider if they believe they may have been exposed.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, no new students from Global Academy or Fairforest Elementary have been excluded from school activities, and the number of students quarantining at home at those schools is now down to 139 following further investigations into potential exposures.
DPH’s 2025 Measles Outbreak page has been updated to include a link to the latest 45-day school reports that include school attendance figures, grades served and vaccination percentage for elementary and secondary schools statewide.
Later this week, a release will be sent identifying locations in the Upstate where a DPH Mobile Health Unit will be offering measles vaccinations for interested community members.
The number of cases we are seeing is evidence of unrecognized community transmission, which does not respect county lines or school zones.

A media briefing will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. (details to come in a separate advisory) to discuss the latest information and take questions.

For more information about measles, visit DPH’s dedicated measles page. It includes important information about the measles virus, symptoms and the measles vaccine, which is available from health care providers as well as local public health departments.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Four additional cases of measles have been reported in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health said Tuesday that four new cases have been reported, bringing the total number reported in South Carolina this year to 23. Of that number, 20 are associated with an outbreak at two Spartanburg County schools and a Greenville County gym.

DPH said that of the four new cases, two were from those who were already quarantining after being exposed to close contacts, and the other two were related to a business in Spartanburg.

None of the cases resulted in additional public exposure, according to the agency.

DPH also said a child was exposed to measles on Sept. 30 at a Crunch Fitness location on South Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville. Anyone who was at that location on that day between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. is asked to see their healthcare provider if they believe they were exposed...

TUESDAY MEASLES UPDATE: DPH Increases Measles Case Count by Eight to 33 total in 2025, 30 related to Upstate Outbreak

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Oct. 28, 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is adding eight new confirmed cases of measles in Spartanburg County since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina this year to 33 and the total number of cases in the current Upstate outbreak to 30.

All eight new cases were linked to close contacts of known cases who had been quarantining at home.

The successful early quarantining as a result of the identified exposure is a positive public health outcome that shows how rapid containment efforts – quarantining if exposed – is highly effective in preventing community spread.

In response to the ongoing measles outbreak, the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has activated a Mobile Health Unit to deploy to the following locations this coming week to offer measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine to unvaccinated individuals at no cost.

Locations:

Thursday, Oct. 30: 2-6 p.m. at Inman Library, 50 Mill St., Inman, SC 29349
Monday, Nov. 3: 1-4 p.m. at Boiling Springs Library, 871 Double Bridge Rd., Boiling Springs, S.C. 29316
Wednesday, Nov. 5: 1-4 p.m. Boiling Springs Library, 871 Double Bridge Rd., Boiling Springs, S.C. 29316
Thursday, Nov. 6: 1-4 p.m. Boiling Springs Library, 871 Double Bridge Rd., Boiling Springs, S.C. 29316

Since being deployed beginning Oct. 16, the Mobile Health Unit has administered 24 vaccines: 19 adults, 5 children.

If anyone is wondering whether they or their child already are vaccinated, people who receive immunizations from South Carolina providers can access their immunization record through the SIMON public portal. As of Jan. 1, 2017, all immunization providers are to report all administered doses of vaccines to the state immunization registry.

Doses administered prior to 2017 may not be recorded in the registry. If you have questions regarding your immunizations, please reach out to your primary health care provider or the provider that administered the vaccines.

Our next scheduled update on case counts and disease-related activity will occur Friday, Oct. 31.

2025 Measles Outbreak

Updated: Nov. 14, 2025
Current Situation

DPH is actively responding to a measles outbreak in the Upstate region. As of Nov. 14, 2025, DPH is reporting 47 cases of measles since July 9, 44 centered around Spartanburg County in the current outbreak.

On Oct. 2, 2025, DPH confirmed a measles outbreak in Upstate region. An outbreak is defined as three or more cases of the same infectious disease linked to a common exposure.

There has been a rise in measles cases in the Upstate this year, with most concentrated in Spartanburg County.

Some cases are travel-related exposures or close contacts of known cases. Other cases have no identified source, suggesting that measles is circulating in the community and could spread further. We have seen measles spread quickly in unvaccinated households here in South Carolina. We also know that it can spread quickly in unvaccinated communities based on outbreaks in other states. KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Measles is highly contagious:
    • A person is contagious four days before and after a rash begins, meaning someone can spread measles before they know they are infected.
    • The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves.
  • The measles vaccine (MMR and MMRV) is the best way to protect yourself and others against measles. Use the DPH Recommendations for Measles Vaccination chart to understand if you need to be vaccinated or not.
Updates
We will post measles updates twice a week, at noon on Tuesday and Friday. In time, this update frequency may change to more or less each week depending on disease activity.

MOBILE HEALTH UNIT (MHU) VACCINES

In response to the ongoing measles outbreak, the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has activated its Mobile Health Unit to deploy to the following locations to offer measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine to unvaccinated individuals at no cost. NOTE: The MMR vaccine is given as a two-dose series and booster doses are generally not needed. DPH also provides information about vaccine services by other providers. TUESDAY MEASLES UPDATE: DPH Confirms 5 new Measles Cases in Upstate Outbreak, Bringing Outbreak Total to 49, Total Reported This Year to 52

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Nov. 18, 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting five new cases of measles in the state since Friday. The total number of cases in South Carolina now related to the Upstate outbreak is 49, and the total number reported to DPH this year is 52.

Two of the five cases are household members of known measles cases who were in quarantine. The other three are the result of as-yet unknown sources of transmission.

The initial investigation of contacts of the new cases has determined potential exposures in public settings. Additional information will be provided once more details are obtained. The direct contacts and impacted facilities are being notified of the potential exposures. There are now 84 people in quarantine. The dates of the exposures indicate that the quarantine period for these individuals will end on Nov. 29.

The unidentified sources of the three new cases emphasizes the risk of ongoing community transmission in South Carolina. Travel for the upcoming holidays may increase the risk of exposures greatly for those traveling and for those accepting visitors...

COLUMBIA, S.C. — State health officials are reporting three new measles cases linked to the ongoing Upstate outbreak, bringing the total number of related cases in South Carolina to 52. The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) says 55 cases have been reported statewide this year.

According to DPH, two of the newly confirmed cases are household contacts of known infections. The third involves an individual with no known exposure source, signaling additional unknown community transmission.

As part of its latest contact tracing, DPH reports 137 people are now in quarantine and one person is in isolation. Of those in quarantine, 57 are associated with Lyman Elementary, 55 with Boiling Springs Middle School, and one with D.R. Hill Middle School. Faculty, staff, students, and parents from all three schools have been notified. Students who complete quarantine without symptoms are expected to return to class on Nov. 29.

DPH is also alerting the public about a confirmed measles case in an employee at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). Officials say visitors may have been exposed on Nov. 10 and 11 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day. Another exposure site includes the Way of Truth Church in Inman, where an individual attended while infectious on Friday, Nov. 7 (7–11 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 9 (10 a.m.–2 p.m.).

Anyone who was at GSP or the church during the listed dates and times is urged to monitor for symptoms and contact a healthcare provider if they become ill—while notifying the provider of the possible exposure in advance...
