South African government officials have accused countries such as the United Kingdom, the US and parts of Europe for their "draconian" reaction to the new coronavirus strain despite themselves battling a fourth wave.

South African government officials have described the response of countries that have put flight bans in place, following the emergence of the new coronavirus strain, as "knee-jerk and draconian" while early investigations were still underway.
... South Africa Health Minister Joe Phaahla said his country should not be punished for being transparent and was confused with the reaction as parts of Europe were battling a fourth wave heading into winter.
"The reaction of countries to impose travel bans are completely against the norms and standards as guided by the World Health Organisation," he said in a fiery press conference.
... He accused other nations of "wanting to put blame" and label the new strain as the "South African variant" rather than working together as a worldwide community and follow guidelines set out by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
