Influenza surveillance report - South Africa

Comment:
The 2012 influenza started in week 21 (ending 27 May),peaked in week 33 (ending 19 August) and ended in week 39 (ending 30 September). From 1 January to 30 December of 2012 ), 1933 specimens were received from Viral Watch sites in all nine provinces. Influenza A (unsubtyped) was detected in 10 patients, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in five, influenza A(H3N2) in 438, and influenza B in 316 patients.
In this time period 4904 patients with SARI were tested at the 5 sentinel sites, and influenza A(unsubtyped) was detected in five patients, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in one, influenza A(H3N2) in 118, and influenza B in 134 patients.
Please note that these data are from sentinel sites and reflect trends in the areas with participating sites. Numbers reported reflect numbers of patients enrolled into the surveillance programmes and do not reflect total numbers of patients in the community.
