April 10: South Africa cases pass 2000

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have passed the 2000 mark. Figures released on April 10 put the figure at 2003 from 73,028 cases. The death toll has also hit 24 from 18 with 95 recoveries as of April 9.

The country is Africa’s most impacted and the big figures are credited to the rate of testing. Comparatively, most other African countries can only boast of below 10,000 tests as compared to South Africa’s 73,000 plus tests.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an extension to the 21-day lockdown announced last month. The two-week extension he says will be critical in containment efforts. The president and his cabinet agreed a salary slash to support the government’s solidarity fund
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that South Africa has two more deaths and recorded 99 new infections, 438 815 people have been screened in the country, while 4 537 was referred to have further testing.

Professor Salim Abdool Karim, an epidemiologist and infectious diseases specialist who is working as an advisor for the government, said the coronavirus infection had shown to be increasing, in keeping with global trends, but that changed once the lockdown was introduced.

Karim contrasted South Africa’s Covid-19 “line” with other countries like the UK and China, and said the data showed that South Africa’s epidemic trajectory was unique.

He said there were three possible reasons: the first that South Africa could be testing less, doing tests mainly in the private sector as opposed to public - and not getting a sense of what is happening in poorer areas, or the reduction could be “genuine”.

Karim’s presentation showed that the first possibility could not be, since South Africa had dramatically increased the number of testing since the outbreak began.

Regarding testing poorer communities, he said National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) “sharply increased” its testing in the “townships and the communities”.

Karim says the next week is "critical" because the number of cases that are found will guide the government's next move.

“We cannot escape this epidemic, not unless South Africa has… some mojo that protects us that is not present anywhere else in the world.”

Prof Karim argues for voluntary partial lockdown until end September for older people
