THE NATIONAL Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports that as of January 16, South Africa has 139 laboratory-confirmed measles cases, with the majority coming from the Western Cape (84 cases).

Other provinces affected include Gauteng (14 cases), Mpumalanga (20), Limpopo (7), Free State (6), Northern Cape (4), North West (3), and Eastern Cape (1).​..

Pretoria parents are growing increasingly concerned after health authorities confirmed a measles outbreak in the City of Tshwane, which has recorded 16 laboratory-confirmed cases so far, including 10 reported in the past four weeks.

The latest measles situation report from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases​ shows that 491 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were recorded across South Africa between 29 December 2025 and 1 March 2026. While the Western Cape remains the hardest hit, Gauteng has also reported outbreaks in both the City of Johannesburg and the City of Tshwane, adding to growing concern among parents in Pretoria.​..

Western Cape health officials confirm measles cases at Hout Bay schools

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has confirmed several measles cases linked to schools in Hout Bay.

According to a statement, cases have been identified at Hout Bay Primary School, Oranjekloof Moravian Primary School, and Disa Primary School, prompting health authorities to step up vaccination and monitoring efforts in the area.

Provincial health officials say the rise in measles infections forms part of a broader increase being seen across the Western Cape and elsewhere in South Africa.​..

Measles and rubella surveillance data and analyses are updated daily and reported weekly. The reported figures may be influenced by the number of specimens from suspected cases that are received by the laboratory at the time of testing.
Measles surveillance

National measles surveillance has detected an increase in measles cases nationwide. Data available (accessed 26 May 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 24 May 2026 (ISO Weeks 1-21) indicated that 1709 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationally. In the previous two weeks, the Western Cape reported the highest number of new cases (50), followed by Free State (30), Northern Cape (16), Limpopo (15), Gauteng (14), the Eastern Cape (10), Mpumalanga (9), and North West (5). No new cases were reported for KwaZulu-Natal.​..

Measles surveillance

National measles surveillance has detected an increase in measles cases nationwide. Data available (accessed 24 June 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 21 June 2026 (ISO Weeks 1-25) indicated that 2476 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationally. Since the previous report, several additional cases were identified. The Free State reported the highest number of new cases (132), followed by Western Cape (58), Gauteng (46), Northern Cape (44), Limpopo (36), Mpumalanga (28), Eastern Cape (20), KwaZulu-Natal (6), and North West (4).​..
