The Department of Health says four cases of measles have been detected in Gauteng

Three of the cases were detected in Tshwane, with the department saying this means the city is experiencing an outbreak.

The fourth case was detected on the West Rand.

The department’s spokesperson Foster Mohale says all four individuals are in isolation.

“The health authorities in the affected districts and communities are working together to identify and conduct vaccination of contacts, and (Health) Minister Phaahla urges parents and caregivers to ensure that their children are up-to-date with their vaccinations in line with the vaccination schedule against measles and other childhood diseases.”...

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has declared a measles outbreak after three cases from two healthcare facilities were reported in the Greater Sekhukhune District, Limpopo, within 30 days.

“A measles outbreak is classified as three laboratory-confirmed measles cases reported within 30 days in a district, and a public health response investigation is needed to identify new measles cases and vaccination of the contacts to prevent the spread of the disease,” the NICD explained on Thursday.

According to the public health institute, the first two measles cases had an onset date of 22 and 25 September 2022.
The third case was reported on 2 October 2022.

The measles cases were detected in children aged 11 years, one-year-old and 11 months, respectively.

The NICD said two children have not been vaccinated for measles, while the other child’s vaccination status is unknown...

This brings to seven the number of reported cases in the area, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said on Monday.

Measles outbreak cases increase to 11 in Limpopo

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) announced on Friday that the number of measles infections has increased to 11 as of 27 October 2022 in the Greater Sekhukhune District, Limpopo.

This comes after the NICD declared a measles outbreak after three cases from two healthcare facilities were reported in the same district early this month.

“The ages of the measles confirmed cases ranged from nine months to 24 years, with four males and four females,” the public health institute’s statement read.

According to the data, of the latest infections, three children were fully vaccinated for measles, while two cases had unknown vaccination histories.

In addition, two children had not been jabbed against the viral infection.

“One measles case was hospitalised and another developed pneumonia without hospitalisation.”

Limpopo and Greater Sekhukhune District health officials have since started public health response activities with the support of the NICD and the World Health Organisation (WHO)...

Limpopo has recorded 14 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases in the province’s two sub-districts between 8 and 9 November 2022, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported on Thursday.

This brings the number of laboratory-confirmed measles outbreak to 35 infections.

This comes after the NICD declared a measles outbreak after three cases from two healthcare facilities were reported in the same district in October.

The laboratory-confirmed measles cases in the Greater Sekhukhune District remain at 16 cases, while the Mopani District has gone up to 19.

According to the NICD, the measles infections reported in the Mopani District were found in Greater Giyani, Ba-Phalaborwa, and Ga-Kgapane districts.

“Epidemiological investigations linked two measles cases in the Greater Sekhukhune involves a father and child,” the NICD said.

“In the Mopani and Ba-Phalaborwa, two siblings with measles infection had contact with laboratory-confirmed cases in the Greater Sekhukhune and the Greater Giyani when they travelled there for a family funeral.”

While two cases have been reported from Vhembe District, the NICD said these cases do not have any links to outbreak-associated cases...

Measles spreads to Mpumalanga as Limpopo records more cases

Fifty-seven measles outbreak cases have been reported in Limpopo and Mpumalanga between September 1 and November 16.

Last week, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 35 confirmed measles cases in the Mopani and Sekhukhune districts in Limpopo. The update on Thursday confirms new cases have been reported in Mpumalanga.

“Capricorn and Waterberg districts in Limpopo and Ehlanzeni in Mpumalanga reported three or more laboratory-confirmed measles cases within 30 days in the district that meets the criteria for declaring a measles outbreak,” the NICD said on Thursday.

It said measles cases in Limpopo had increased to 52 since the beginning of the outbreak, and cases are increasing in the Capricorn, Greater Sekhukhune, Mopani and Waterberg districts.

It said Vhembe district reported two laboratory-confirmed measles cases, with one case epidemiologically linked to the measles in circulation in Zimbabwe...

Information on why the children are not vaccinated with the measles vaccine is needed to improve the vaccination programme in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said this on Thursday as it announced a steady increase in measles cases recorded in SA, up to 99 cases in Limpopo and Mpumalanga from September 1 and November 30.

Last week, the NICD reported 71 cases. Measles cases in Limpopo increased to 77, and there were now 22 cases in Mpumalanga.

The NICD said in Limpopo, 53 measles cases had unknown vaccination histories, 12 did not receive any measles vaccine doses, 10 were fully immunised with two doses, and two were partially immunised with one dose.

“In Mpumalanga, in 13 laboratory-confirmed measles cases, vaccination histories were unknown, six did not receive any measles vaccine dose, and three were fully immunised.

“Overall, 18 laboratory-confirmed measles cases of the 33 cases with known vaccination histories did not receive a single dose of the measles vaccine, making them susceptible to the infection," the NICD said...

N West declares measles outbreak

Parents and guardians in the North West are encouraged to check their children’s ‘Road to Health’ booklet to make sure that their routine vaccinations are up to date.

This comes after the Centre for Vaccines and Immunology and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) recorded a measles outbreak in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

The North West Department of Health has been notified of three laboratory-confirmed measles cases with one “equivocal” case.

According to the provincial department, the specimens were collected at Lonely Park Clinic in Mahikeng sub-district on 2 December 2022.

The department said tracing is underway for patients who live in Signal Hill, while the province will continue to monitor developments through the online dashboard.

The provincial measles vaccination coverage is 79.4% for those who received the first dose and 82.3% for those who received their second shot.

“There is an outbreak of measles in South Africa and in Ngaka Modiri Molema District, which is easily prevented with the measles vaccine. The vaccine is usually given when children are six months and 12 months old, but you can get the vaccine at any age,” the department said.

According to the latest NICD report, from 1 September to 30 November 2022, 99 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, with the provinces declaring a measles outbreak.

Data show that laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Limpopo increased to 77 and 22 in Mpumalanga.

The most affected districts in Limpopo are Greater Sekhukhune District, Mopani District and Waterberg District.

In Mpumalanga, increased laboratory-confirmed measles cases were logged in the Elukwatini area in the Gert Sibande District.

The ages of measles patients in Limpopo ranged from three months to 42 years old, while in the Ehlanzeni District in Mpumalanga, ages ranged from four months to 13 years old.

The most affected age group is the five to nine years age group in Mpumalanga, and one to four years in Limpopo.

In addition, three people, with laboratory-confirmed measles, were hospitalised and no measles deaths have been reported in Limpopo and Mpumalanga...

Durban - More and more people are being diagnosed with measles after an outbreak in four provinces, the National Department of Health (DOH) warned this week.

Most infections occurred in children aged between five and nine, but the DOH said generally the ages of those affected ranged from two months to 42 years.

Spokesman Foster Mohale said so far the outbreaks had been noted in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, and on Thursday alone 13 new cases were reported.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

A Measles outbreak was declared in Limpopo province on 11
October 2022. Subsequently, the North West province and
Gauteng provinces reported measles outbreaks on 2 and 6
December 2022 respectively.

From epidemiological week 40 to 49, the country observed an
increase in laboratory-confirmed measles cases, with a total of
169 laboratory-confirmed measles cases reported between 11
October and 07 December across four provinces out of nine in
the country: Limpopo (98), Mpumalanga (50), Gauteng (13) and
North West (8).

The 98 cases of laboratory-confirmed measles in Limpopo, were
reported from 11 October to 07 December. Of the 98 measles
cases, 76 had an unknown vaccination status, 10 were vaccinated,
and 12 were unvaccinated.

From epidemiological week 41 when the outbreak was declared
in Limpopo province to EW45, the number of measles cases
reported weekly, increased steadily, and peaked at week 47.
The age of reported cases across the country ranges from 2
months to 42 years. Children between age group 5-9 years are
the most affected representing 44% of cases; while those among
the 1-4 years represents 28% of cases. Of the 169 cases, 125
had an unknown vaccination status against measles, 18 were
vaccinated and 26 were unvaccinated.

Vaccination status for laboratory-confirmed measles cases
in provinces with a declared measles outbreak indicates that
74% have unknown vaccination status while only 11% where
vaccinated in the provinces.

PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

The South African Health authority are supporting the following
activities in response to the measles outbreak. The public health
response to the measles outbreak in provinces is targeted at
improving measles immunity in all affected provinces.

Provinces are currently conducting vaccination campaigns
in the affected areas. Routine immunization should be
reinforced as the outbreak is an opportunity to identify and
correct vaccination programme weaknesses.

Routine Immunization has been strengthened in affected
districts and provinces

Strengthening surveillance and coordination of the response
to the outbreak implemented at both provincial and district
levels is ongoing.

Follow up on laboratory-confirmed measles cases for case
management support

Follow up and vaccinate the contacts of laboratory confirmed
cases.

Continue to support the response with additional logistics
including, medicines and medical consumables for case
management

SITUATION INTERPRETATION

The measles outbreak in South Africa which has been showing
an increasing trend in the past month has seen a decline in
the past seven days. Given the strong laboratory capacity in
country, all reported cases have been laboratory confirmed.
Case management tracking and follow up of cases and contacts
for vaccination is ongoing, however vaccination strengthening
efforts must continue to get the outbreak under control.

The NICD said in a statement that measles has been confirmed in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Gauteng, and Free State provinces.

Mumbai on Friday reported six measles cases, which took the tally here to 512, while the death toll stood unchanged at nine, a civic official said.

The city also has five suspected fatalities, in which it is yet to be confirmed if measles was the cause of death, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said. A civic release said 27 children were admitted in hospitals during the day and 25 were discharged. "Only 116 of the 335 beds earmarked for measles treatment are currently occupied. There has been an outbreak of measles in the town of Bethlehem in the Free State.

Five cases were reported, said health department acting spokesperson Elke de Witt.

"Patients affected are currently receiving treatment," said De Witt.

The Free State cases come as part of a national outbreak that has affected four other provinces.

The majority of cases have been recorded in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, News24 previously reported. There have been more than 220 cases reported nationally with around half of those in Limpopo...

The highly infectious disease was declared an outbreak by the NICD last week, recording at least 200 cases.

Almost 100 more cases have been recorded in just under a week.

This comes after Limpopo recorded the first few cases at the beginning of October. The disease has also now spread across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State and the North West.
