School Districts Prepare For Swine Flu Outbreak

Posted: 11:12 pm EDT August 19, 2009

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. -- In just about a week or so students are going to be heading back to the classroom. However, this year part of their education is going to be disease prevention. School officials in Somerset County said they are concerned about swine flu spreading and they are taking action to keep that from happening.

Teachers in the Conemaugh Township School District already have disinfectant wipes in hand as they prepare for the little ones to come back to school.

Experts fear swine flu could be a big problem this fall and winter, and they are currently testing vaccines for children.

Officials at Conemaugh Township Schools said they are going to educate students and parents about the right way to wash hands. They will also have sanitizer in classrooms and continue to disinfect desk tops, door handles, books, toys and more.

"We are also going to educate our staff on the first day of school," said elementary school principal Nicole Dull. "We are going to send home information about the swine flu to partents and we are going to talk about it at our open houses."

Parents are also being urged to keep their children home when sick.

It's not known when a vaccine will be available for students.
