Somalia: Diphtheria epidemic in central Somalia
Mogadishy Friday 14 May 2010 SMC

Somaliweyn ? Mohammed Omar Hussein

So far 4 children are reported to have died at Dhusamareb town the capital of Galgadud region in central Somalia after an outbreak of Diphtheria in the region, while some others are now admitted at Dhusamareb main hospital.

2 of the 4 children who have died are said to be siblings, and they have been ailing for a short time of period, and died.

The few Nurses and Doctors in the region are struggling on how to curb the outbreak of the disease, despite the scarcity of medication in the region.

?Right away after we have recognized that there is an outbreak of the disease we have commenced efforts to fight or even to alleviate the risk of the disease? said Dr. Abdi Weli Ahmed Hirey the regional medical officer of Galgadud region.

The doctor has strongly blamed the parents in the region for ignoring the significance of the vaccination given to children under the age of 6, and has urged all parents to vaccinate their children from the 6 fatal diseases which attack children mainly when they are under the age of 6.

These 6 deadly diseases which the Dr. talks about are Measles, Whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, Polio and TB, and among all these child disease the only disease which the International health communities focuses on is the Polio, and it seems the others are neglected.

There are some other diseases which have been eradicated from the world for instance the smallpox.
