HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC) --- Five Solomon Island athletes have been admitted at the National Referral hospital after contracting a viral infection in New Caledonia during the Pacific Games.
Undersecretary for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Chairman of the Pandemic Task force Committee, Dr Cedric Alependava says the five people were admitted after the task force launched a response plan on last Thursday, screening all the passengers on board flights from New Caledonia.
Dr Alependava says one of the five people had displayed symptoms of influenza A or swine flu but is yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile the Health under Secretary has urged returning athletes to seek medical advice if they think they are infected with the influenza.
He also assured the public that the Pandemic Task force and its stakeholders are confident of containing any outbreak of the Swine flu virus if it is confirmed.

Athlete tested positive with H1N1 virus, treated and discharged
SOLOMON Islands has recorded its first confirmed case of the H1N1 virus, swine flu.
The virus was acquired by one of the athletes returning recently from the Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia.
This was confirmed to the Solomon Star by Chairman of national epidemic task force Dr Cedric Alependava yesterday after results returned positive.
Dr Cedric said they have received the result confirming the swine flu case on Tuesday from Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) PACNET in New Caledonia.
?With the positive case this would be the first positive case for a Solomon Islander in the country as we had only three cases in the past during the height of swine flu outbreak in the pacific in year 2009 in which all of them were expatriates.?
However he said that the person infected with the swine flu had been discharged after being admitted and treated at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) upon arrival.

Task force on H1N1 virus alert
The national epidemic task force in the country is on high alert and had taken step to fight against H1N1 virus, swine flu in the country.
This was after one of the athletes attending the South Pacific Games in New Caledonia was confirmed infected with the H1N1 virus, swine flu.
Chairman of the task force Doctor Cedric Alependava said a special training was held yesterday at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) Conference room for health workers at NRH and at sentinel sites.
