Diarrhoea in Solomons: 16 dead

The Ministry of Health in Solomon Islands has declared a nationwide diarrhoea outbreak which has resulted in the deaths of 16 young children in the past two weeks.
It says medical teams are dealing with the outbreaks which has affected over 1,000 people.
The Ministry says the outbreaks have been reported in six provinces, including Guadalcanal, Western Province, Choiseul, Malaita, Central and Makira.

At least 18 children have died in a diarrhoea outbreak sweeping across the Solomon Islands.

Health officials say at least a thousand other people have fallen ill.

The Ministry of Health has declared a nationwide alert and is urging citizens to wash their hands with soap and use clean towels after using the toilet...

HONIARA, Solomon Islands ---The World Health Organisation says young children in Solomons Islands are particularly vulnerable to severe effects of dehydration and it's urging parents to seek medical advice to limit the spread of diarrhoea illness.

An epidemiologist Jennie Musto says the WHO is now reporting a total of nine outbreaks across Solomon Islands, with 16 young children dying and more than 1,000 people infected with the illness in the past two weeks...

Rotavirus claims more in Solomons

Save the Children in Solomon Islands says two more children have died from rotavirus in the past week in Western Province.

The head of logistics and emergency, Graeme Kenna, says the latest cases brings the total number of deaths from the outbreak to 18 in the past three weeks, all of whom were children...

...Graeme Kenna says the struggle to contain the rotavirus outbreak has been compounded by recent confirmation of 24 cases of leprosy diagnosed in people living in temporary accommodation following April's floods.
