Soldiers To Donate Blood To Replenish Supply At National Blood Bank

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Some 2,830 army members nationwide will donate blood in a blood donation drive to be held from today until March, to overcome shortage of the supply at the National Blood Bank.

Assistant head of staff of the human resources branch Brigadier General Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Bakar said the activity was planned to meet current needs and included in the army's calendar.

"The response from the soldiers is very encouraging," he told reporters when met at the National Blood Bank, here, where some 400 army members donated their blood Thursday.

One of the donors, Lance Corporal Aidil Mat Amin, 38, from the Jalan Padang Tembak army camp, said he had donated blood 71 times since 1995.

"I donate blood once a month. It is important to donate blood because besides helping those in need, we will also have a good health," he added.

It has been reported that several government and private hospitals are facing a shortage in blood supply due to discouraging donor response while demand was high.

To increase its blood stock, the National Blood Centre with the cooperation of various quarters, has conducted blood donation campaign at various locations since Jan 18.

Tomorrow, the venue will be at Bolton Bhd, Campbell Complex, Jalan Dang Wangi and on Jan 23, its mobile units will be at Jusco Cheras Selatan; Jusco Taman Maluri; Kolej Teknologi Makmal Perubatan, Jalan Pahang; TSA Industries Sdn Bhd, Balakong; KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital; and Kelab Unity Ampang, Tanah Cheras Indah.

On Jan 24, the units will be at Dewan Serbaguna Salak Selatan and Lucky Plaza.

People can also donate blood at the National Blood Centre in Jalan Tun Razak (next to the National Library) on the following days and times: Monday-Wednesday (7.30am-5.30pm); Thursday and Friday (7.30am-8pm) and Saturday (7.30am-4pm).
