Solano County swine flu death confirmed

A 53-year-old Solano County man with the H1N1 virus has died, health officials confirmed Thursday.

His death was Solano County's first and California's 17th caused by the swine flu virus.

Citing the need to protect patient confidentiality, officials said they will not release his identity or city of residence.

"We are saddened by this man's death," Solano Public Health Officer Ronald W. Chapman said. "He had no other identified major health conditions."

Ten of the state's 17 H1N1 fatalities had such pre-existing health conditions as chronic respiratory disease, like asthma and emphysema, according to the state Department of Public Health. Another common factor appears to be obesity.

Sonoma County health officials said an elderly man with pre-existing medical conditions and a probable case of the H1N1 virus died last Friday. The virus has not yet been confirmed.

Solano County has had 11 confirmed H1N1 cases, they said. Most have been mild or moderate, and full patient recovery is expected.

It is estimated that there are thousands of cases throughout the state. Due to the high demand on laboratory services, however, only cases involving hospitalizations and fatalities are being laboratory tested for the H1N1 virus.
