Smithfield Foods Inc. reaffirmed Sunday that there is no evidence of so-called swine flu in any of its swine herds or employees at its facilities.

Although swine flu, also known as H1N1, is not transmitted by food, the outbreak that first began in Mexico has hurt pork producers' business.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recently said it tentatively confirmed that swine from an Alberta herd tested positive for swine flu.

Smithfield, however, does not own or operate hog farms or pork processing plants in Canada, nor does it process Canadian-raised hogs at any of the company's U.S. plants.

The company is the largest processor and marketer of fresh pork and packaged meat in the U.S., as well as the largest pork producer.
