This is the startling scene featuring firemen covering the floor of Penrhys Smallpox Hospital with paraffin before setting it ablaze.
All that remains of the hospital?s physical legacy today are high walls atop a windswept Rhondda mountain, but half a century ago it had been reopened to deal with the ensuing crisis when an outbreak of the infectious disease hit South Wales, claiming 19 lives.
Almost one million people in the region were vaccinated in the terrifying 1962 smallpox epidemic, during which 47 people contracted the illness...
