EDMONTON - In light of a review of Alberta?s response to last year?s H1N1 pandemic, provincial health officials say they?ll be better prepared next time.
The report, by the Health Quality Council of Alberta, cited a lack of planning, slow response and widespread waste during the outbreak.

Last year's rollout of the H1N1 vaccination program was hampered by a lack of planning, slow response that didn't target those most at risk of severe illness and widespread waste that saw tens of thousands of doses thrown out, says a report by the Health Quality Council of Alberta.
The province and health authority tackled the pandemic outbreak almost exclusively as a health issue without considering the impact on society as a whole, the report found. The Alberta government says it is ready to take steps to be better able to respond to possible pandemic disease outbreaks, like 2009?s H1N1 scare.
On Thursday, Dec. 16, Alberta Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky accepted a review of the province?s response to the H1N1 outbreak from the Health Quality Council of Alberta and 17 of its 18 recommendations, taking the last one under advisement.
