New cases of H5N8 in swans

Veterinary Hygienic Service (VHS) over the weekend took more dead swans with Ledava river in the municipality of Lendava. The results of investigations to us by a National Veterinary Institute (NVI), show that the samples present avian influenza virus H5N8. In addition, yesterday the gravel Lakos (municipality of Lendava) took a larger number of dead swans. These are so far the largest participation in mortality of wild birds that have been recorded since the first case of HPAI H5N8 in Slovenia.

NVI has informed us also about the positive results of the investigations on H5N8 in three dead swans, two were found at the Ptuj Lake in the municipality of Markovci and one in the municipality of Videm.

Depending on the number and location of events the disease is not slowing down, so be aware of people who move to areas frequented by wild waterfowl and especially in areas where the virus has been confirmed that with shoes, clothing or means of transportation transferred virus to domestic poultry or captive birds for which the H5N8 virus is very dangerous. For this reason, it is important that poultry keepers utmost account of the conclusions of the National Centre for Disease Control and kept, fed and watered poultry indoors and to avoid contact with wild birds.

Attached map with confirmed cases of AI in the RS.
