Highly pathogenic avian influenza confirmed in poultry in the municipality of Ptuj
17/10/2024

Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for safe food, veterinary medicine and plant protection

Highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype was confirmed in backyard poultry farming in the municipality of Ptuj. Urgent measures were taken on the farm to prevent the spread of the disease. The Administration for Safe Food, Veterinary Medicine and Plant Protection (UVHVVR) urges poultry and captive bird breeders to be cautious and consistently observe protective measures.

The disease was confirmed in the area of the municipality of Ptuj in a backyard farm with 26 animals (pigs, chickens and ducks). Emergency measures were taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

This week, due to the occurrence of disease in two humpback swans in the municipality of Ptuj, the State Center for Disease Control has already taken special measures for the area of the municipalities of Ptuj, Markovci, Videm pri Ptuj and Hajdina. In addition, the disease was confirmed today in three dead humpback swans in the municipality of Brežice.

The UVHVVR therefore urges all poultry and captive bird breeders to be cautious and consistently implement biosecurity measures in order to prevent the introduction of diseases into their flocks.

By implementing measures for early detection and rapid confirmation of the disease, the spread of the disease can be limited and, consequently, the damage caused by the occurrence of the disease can be reduced. If breeders notice any of the following signs, they should notify their veterinarian immediately:

reduced feed and water consumption by more than five percent,
a drop in egg laying by more than five percent,
increased daily mortality by more than three times than expected,
appearance of clinical signs (indifference, ruffled feathers, reduced or unusual hearing, sneezing, coughing, discharge from the nostrils, swelling of the subcutaneous tissue, liquid and green or white-colored stools; nervous disorders may also appear (shaking and twisting of the head and neck, convulsions, uncoordinated movement, animals find it difficult to stand, are inactive, have lowered wings).

As the disease can also be transmitted through contaminated footwear and through animals that come into contact with dead birds or their secretions, the UVHVVR urges walkers to avoid areas where waterfowl are found and not to feed them. If they see dead waterfowl, they should call 112.
