Slovakia records first Q fever outbreak in 30 years
Eleven people hospitalised in Prievidza district as authorities trace source to livestock-linked bacterium.

The emergence of Q fever in Slovakia’s Prievidza district – the country’s first recorded outbreak of the disease in three decades – has unsettled not only doctors and public health officials but also one of the region’s largest livestock producers, as testing begins to determine whether animals are the source.

Daniel Frauenschuh, chairman of the board at Poľno Vtáčnik, told TV Markíza he was shocked by the news. The Austrian businessman, who keeps more than 1,000 sheep and several hundred cattle in and around the village of Ráztočno, said none of his animals currently show signs of illness, although Coxiella burnetii – the bacterium that causes Q fever – can infect livestock without visible symptoms...
