PREŠOV. The hospital in Prešov was filled with patients with jaundice. Bed capacity is full, the situation is critical.
Absolutely fulfilled
"Since last autumn, the university hospital with the JA Reiman polyclinic has been registering an increased number of patients hospitalized in connection with the occurrence of hepatitis A. There are currently 55 hospitalized patients with this diagnosis in the infectious disease department, so the capacity of the department is absolutely full," said the spokeswoman of the Prešov University Hospital, Martina Pavliková .
More than 80 percent of patients do not come from Prešov, but from other districts. Especially from the Podsadek settlement in the Stará Ľubovňa district.
"Other patients are from the districts of Humenné, Bardejov, Stropkov, from the settlement of Jarovnice, and it is assumed that the number of patients infected with this viral disease will increase," the hospital fears.
Critical epidemiological situation
The hospital has already reached its capacity, including the addition of approximately twenty dermatovenerology beds.
That's why she asked for help and cooperation from the Regional Office of Public Health in Prešov, so that other health facilities in the region of the Prešov self-governing region also participate in solving this serious situation.
"This is the only way to handle this critical epidemiological situation," emphasizes Pavliková.
Where there are active outbreaks
Hygienists currently report seven active outbreaks of viral hepatitis type A in the Prešov district.
Apart from the regional town, jaundice is currently found in Velky Šariš, Vyšna Šebastová, Hermanovce, Bzenov and Chminianske Jakubova. Altogether there are fifty diseases.
In the district of Sabinov, there are more cases (58), and only in two foci - Jarovnice and Pečovská Nová Ves.
"In view of the epidemiological situation in the villages of Bzenov, Hermanovce, Chminianske Jakubovany, Jarovnice, Pečovská Nová Ves and in the town of Veľký Šariš, the Regional Office of Public Health with headquarters in Prešov issued decrees ordering measures to prevent the occurrence and spread of communicable diseases, and that for all natural persons residing in municipalities between the ages of one and fifteen years of age (inclusive) to undergo medical supervision and active immunization," the Prešov hygienists inform.
The regional public health office based in Stara Ľubovna confirms that jaundice is currently a big problem in this district. Two new cases of hepatitis A were reported on Friday, the total number is over 150, and there are seven active outbreaks in the district.
There are also increasing reports of jaundice from Horné Zemplín. There are currently over thirty cases in Humenné district.

In the east of Slovakia, cases of type A jaundice are increasing. The hospital in Prešov reports a full condition, the situation is critical according to the staff there. Hygienists identified seven active outbreaks of infection.
The JA Reiman Hospital in Prešov has been dealing with increasing cases of type A jaundice since last fall. But now the situation is becoming critical. " Currently, 55 patients with this diagnosis are hospitalized in the infectious disease department. The capacity of the department is therefore absolutely full, " the SME daily quoted hospital spokesperson Martina Pavliková as saying .
Even though the hospital has added about 20 more beds, it is not enough to accommodate all patients. That's why the hospital asked for cooperation from the Regional Office of Public Health so that other hospitals could also participate in the solution. " This is the only way to manage this epidemiological situation, " added Pavliková. In addition, more than 80% of patients do not even come from Prešov.

Eastern Slovakia is facing an unexpected health crisis. The Prešov Faculty Hospital is struggling with the influx of patients infected with jaundice, and the situation is getting worse every day. Beds are filling up faster than they can be released, and health workers are sounding the alarm, reports the portal Regióny.sk.
A hospital under siege by the virus
The Prešov Faculty Hospital JA Reiman found itself in an unenviable situation. The infectious disease department is bursting at the seams and the capacity of 55 beds is completely exhausted. Despite the fact that the hospital added 20 more dermatovenerology beds, the situation is not improving.
"Since the fall of last year, we have been registering a dramatic increase in patients with hepatitis A," said Martina Pavliková, the hospital's spokesperson, to the media. "Currently, the situation is critical and we fear that the number of infected people will continue to rise."
The epidemic is spreading like wildfire
Hepatitis A is spreading through the region at an alarming rate. There are already seven active outbreaks of infection in the Prešov district itself, and the total number of infected has reached 50. However, the situation is even worse in the surrounding districts. Sabinov reports 58 cases, Bardejov a shocking 154 and Michalovce 85.
Paradoxically, the majority of hospitalized patients do not come directly from Prešov. Most of them are from the settlement of Podsadek in the district of Stará Ľubovňa, where more than 150 cases and seven active outbreaks of the disease are currently registered.
Fight with an invisible enemy
The regional office of public health in Prešov has already asked for help from other health facilities in the region. "We can handle this critical epidemiological situation only with joint efforts," emphasized Pavliková.
The chief hygienist of the SR, Dr. Tatiana Červeňová, appeals to the public: "Hepatitis type A spreads very easily through close contact or touching a contaminated object. The incubation period can last up to 50 days, which makes it difficult to control the spread."
Experts emphasize the importance of observing hygiene measures and vaccination in areas at risk. This is the only way to stop the spread of this insidious disease and prevent further overloading of hospitals.
