Six-fold increase in flu cases: Queensland Health

Brisbane's flu season started earlier than expected this year with almost 1300 cases reported to authorities, the state's health department said.

There has already been six times the number of influenza cases, 1294, reported to Queensland Health since January, compared with 194 in the same period last year.

However, the number of cases this year pales in comparison to the number reported amid the 2009 swine flue outbreak, when Queensland Health was notified of 2441 cases of influenza between January 1 and July 8.

Queensland's chief health officer Jeannette Young said the flu season had hit unexpectedly early in 2011, with more autumn cases than usual reported.

"There has been a higher than usual level of influenza cases so far this year and we are not half way through winter yet," she said.

Australian Medical Association state president Gino Pecoraro said the average number of cases reported per month had increased by more than 50 per cent on last year, as a result of Queensland's wild summer weather.

There were 2838 notifications of influenza in Queensland between January 1 and July 4 this year, compared with 465 over the same period in 2010.

Ten-fold rise in flu

IPSWICH health authorities are encouraging residents to have the flu shot amid an explosion in the number of reported cases this year.

Queensland Health figures show 160 influenza cases have been reported in the West Moreton and South Burnett area since January 1, compared to only 17 over the same period in 2010.

While there was no definitive reason given for the 9.5-fold increase from last year, the trend has been witnessed statewide.

There have already been 2838 notifications of influenza across Queensland this year, compared with 465 over the same period in 2010.

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said the peak flu season was still not over, but it wasn't too late to get the vaccine.

?Vaccination is the best protection against this disease and I urge people to visit their local GP or immunisation provider,? Dr Young said.
