Dengue cases highest in over a year, but recent storms may bring relief

SINGAPORE – Dengue infections have been going up for six consecutive weeks, with 396 cases reported in the week of Jan 7 to 13 – the highest weekly figure in more than a year. Six weeks ago, there were just 143 cases.

While this is a far cry from the 1,552 cases a week at the peak of the infection in 2022, the steady increase in cases has the National Environment Agency (NEA) urging people living in dengue cluster areas to take immediate action to suppress the Aedes mosquito population and help break disease transmission.

It also asked them to cooperate with NEA officers inspecting their property for mosquito larvae.

There were almost 10,000 dengue cases reported in 2023, down from the more than 32,000 cases in 2022. The largest number of this Aedes mosquito-borne viral infection seen here was in 2020, when there were 35,315 cases and 32 deaths...

SINGAPORE – More than 2,000 dengue cases have been reported since the start of 2024. This is the highest number recorded in at least five years for the corresponding period.

It is more than one-fifth of all dengue infections in 2023.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) told The Straits Times that the continued rise in cases – numbers have gone up over nine consecutive weeks – is “a big concern”. But it is still too early to say if it will result in a major outbreak in 2024.

There were 494 infections in the week ending Feb 3. Since then, another 185 cases have been reported as at Feb 6, 11am....

SINGAPORE – Dengue cases continue to rise here, with the number of new infections hitting 416 in the week of March 31 to April 6. This is 67 cases more than in the previous week.

Already, more than 5,500 people have contracted the infection in the first 14 weeks of 2024, according to National Environment Agency (NEA) data. And, as at March 25, seven people – most of them elderly – have died of dengue.

In 2023, the number of dengue cases stood at 9,949, and there were six deaths that year.

There are currently 90 active dengue clusters, of which 20 have 10 or more cases, NEA said.

Several clusters where a fast rate of dengue transmission has been observed include a 118-case cluster in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and Avenue 4, an 83-case cluster in Marsiling Road and Marsiling Rise, and a cluster of 53 cases in Gangsa Road.

Cases in Singapore have shot up ahead of the traditional peak dengue season from May to October, and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Baey Yam Keng had warned of the rise when he launched the National Dengue Prevention Campaign 2024 on March 31.

NEA said that since the start of 2024, the weekly number of reported dengue cases has remained high, at above 300.

This, coupled with the high Aedes aegypti mosquito population and the low population immunity to all four dengue virus serotypes here, may lead to a surge in dengue cases in the coming months, if insufficient action is taken, the agency added...

SINGAPORE – Dengue case numbers in 2024 have crossed the 10,000 mark, surpassing the number of cases logged for the whole of 2023.

According to latest figures by the National Environment Agency (NEA), there were 267 dengue cases between July 14 and July 22, and that took the total number of local infections this year to 10,141.
