it clearly was not much of a concern for people in ancient times.

In the year 412 BC Hippocrates described an
epidemic that modern doctors believe was influenza,
and history has recorded many influenza epidemics
and pandemics since that time.

In the Middle Ages several widespread outbreaks
that were probably influenza occurred in Europe. But
the first epidemics that can be regarded with confi-
dence as influenza were in 1173. However, the
position of some medical historians that only
epidemics which occurred in 1510 can be considered
as unquestionable influenza epidemics [1]. In 1580
a severe pandemic occurred that was possibly the first
global dissemination of influenza

So, no global dissemination of influenza before 1580 ?
Maybe a pandemic needs advanced human travel methods
or high human population.

Influenza pandemics show the pattern of a new virus
establishing in humans which destroys the previously existing
human flu-A viruses. The evolution starts new from that point.
The avian virus evolves and becomes more human like.
This was what we have since 1918. The 1957,1968 events
were just a rearrangement of 1918-genes with additional
H3 or H2 genes newly acquired from birds.So 80% of todays
viruses is still from 1918. We can clearly watch the evolution and
how the virus became more and more human-like through
the last 80 years.
In birds, where flu usually resides it's different. You can see a more
uniform picture of all sorts of co-existing viruses with large variety
and without clear origin.
So, the pattern of evolution of flu in humans is different.
And presumably quite new. We won't expect these cycles
of new-introduction from birds with pandemic and wiping out of earlier
strains, then evolution and adaption in humans which makes the virus
quite distinct from all avian viruses.
And then after 100 years or such another pandemic which wipes out the
old viruses.
This doesn't seem to be a stable cycle which we could expect to be going
on since thousands of years.
If all flu in humans earlier or later is wiped out by a new strain
which comes from birds - then there is basically no continuous evolution
in humans. Humans are just not important for flu.
It's an "accident" when humans are infected.

Unless the virus jumps back from humans to birds and gives
acquired mutations to birds. But this doesn't seem to be the case.

So also this fight of human immunity against viruses who
escape by mutating quickly, by reassorting, by developing 16 different
HAs is it really driven by human-virus evolution ?

There just wasn't enough time since 1500 or such for
human genetical changes. And the virus doesn't need humans,
it evolves in birds.


how can it be an advantage for a virus when it is also capable
of infecting humans, binding to alpha 2-6, etc. when earlier or later
it is being wiped out by a new pandemic,avian virus anyway ?

were mammals important in the history of flu-development ?

of 1918 panflu-H1N1 and nowadays H5N1 are
1885,1885,1903,1903,1650,1903,1903,1903
for the 8 segments.
H5 and H2 hemagglutinin(segment 4) are more alike,
with a MRCA-date of ~1750.
So, H5 as we know it is only some centuries old and a
H5-pandemic of the 18th century could have been the "same"
as a H2-pandemic. Or there could have been a H5-pandemic already
(or better: anchestor of nowadays H5) but the virus was quite
different from nowadys H5N1 and obviously it was less
dangerous for humans. Maybe however this was due to slower
human travel (by horse or by ship).

Please. There is no evidence for "Asian" high path H5N1 prior to 1996.

There are some examples with unusually few changes in segments 7 and 8.
The H5N1 "as we know it" was first repoorted to have the HA cleavage sit, RERRRKKR, in 1996. There were MANY H5 isolates prior to 1996 going back to the first H5N1 in a Scotish chicken in 1959, but the first example of H5N1 "as we know it" was the guangdong goose in 1996.

So it's unlikely we will have one now.

Please. As I said, there were MANY avian isolates prior to 1996 and none had the cleavage site.
You are making it up as you go along.
The H5N1 that has attracted all of the attention is VERY new, and you are once again posting nonsense.

What's up is the nonsense. There are lots of avian infleunza sequences. No Asian HPAI H5N1 prior to 1996 and no H5N1 prior to 1959.

You have ZERO evidence for HPAI H5N1 prior to 1996.

Nonsense is nonsense (as in internet babble).

being created from nothing. They can reassort to form new viruses,
new combinations.

examples. And as long as this is the case we can reasonably speak of
MCRAs and such.

These threads are supposed to be covering science. Unfortunately, there is a tendancy to put up posts with no support, which is annoying, expecially when it is done again and again by the same poster.

This story is quite simple. H5N1 has recently emerged, which is the serotype of concern. The posts are digressions which have nothing to do with the various Asian versions of H5N1. This prototype was first reported in 1996. There are many isolates since the 1968 pandemic, but no H5N1 of interest until 1996.

Why do you accept the findings of no H5N1 in wild birds prior to 1996, yet you will not accept all the findings of negative tests in wild birds now?

No H5N1 ANYWHERE prior to 1996 (wild birds, poultry, swine, humans, etc).

Spontaneous generation has fallen from favor. The H5N1 in wild birds now has been reported hundereds of times over. In 1996 or anytime prior, there was no H5N1 reported anywhere.

I think you are missing the point. There is ZERO evidence for H5N1 prior to 1996 even though there was significant testing, including humans.

H5N1 in humans is a new development and the attempts to create an H5N1 (in birds or humans) at a much earlier date have no scientific basis, nor does the speculation that H5N1 won't go pandemic because it has been around for a very long time.
