Omaha Hospital Workers Fired Over Ebola Privacy

OMAHA, Neb. ? Sep 26, 2014, 4:26 PM ET
By MARGERY A. BECK Associated Press

The Nebraska hospital that treated an American aid worker infected with Ebola has fired two workers accused of violating the man's privacy by looking at his medical file.

In a written statement Friday, the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha said an audit of the hospital's electronic medical records led to the discovery that two employees had inappropriately accessed Dr. Rick Sacra's file. The Omaha World-Herald first reported the firings Friday.

The hospital said in the statement that the employees' actions violated federal patient privacy regulations, leading their firing and "other corrective action." The hospital gave no information as to why the employees accessed the records.

"While this is extremely uncommon, we have a zero tolerance for unauthorized access to patient information," the statement said. "In accordance with HIPAA regulations, Dr. Sacra was notified in person and in writing before his departure from the hospital."

Sacra, 51, returned Thursday to his home state of Massachusetts after being successfully treated for the virus he contracted while working in Africa.

Massachusetts doctor cured of Ebola returning to Liberia to resume medical mission work

Article by: PHILIP MARCELO , Associated Press
Updated: December 16, 2014 - 1:10 PM

BOSTON ? A Massachusetts doctor cured of Ebola said Tuesday that he's returning to Liberia, the West African country where he contracted the virus, in January to resume working at a medical mission.

Dr. Richard Sacra said that he plans to spend four weeks at ELWA Hospital, a clinic outside Monrovia where he had contracted the deadly virus in August.

Sacra spent weeks in treatment at an Omaha, Nebraska, hospital before returning home on Sept. 25. The University of Massachusetts Medical School faculty member has worked in medical missions in Liberia for more than 20 years, including the North Carolina-based charity SIM, which founded ELWA Hospital.

Sacra, who was one of at least 10 people so far treated for Ebola in the U.S., says he "feels great" and that doctors have said he's now effectively immune to Ebola...

Dr. Rick Sacra, Ebola Survivor, Returning to Work in Liberia

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? International Christian mission agency SIM (www.simusa.org) confirmed today that Rick Sacra, an SIM doctor who contracted Ebola while serving in Liberia, was transported to the United States for treatment and recovered, will return to work in that country on Jan. 15.

Sacra, 52, a family physician from Holden, Mass., will treat patients at SIM?s ELWA Hospital is Monrovia. He will not be working at the Ebola treatment units on the ELWA campus, but will treat patients with malaria and chronic health issues, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as provide maternity and pediatrics care ? much-needed services with so few hospitals available. He is expected to remain in Liberia for about a month.

SIM?s ELWA Hospital became a model for other hospitals in West Africa during the Ebola crisis, developing treatment facilities, screening processes and offering other critical care medical services when other facilities were shutting down.

?I am feeling well physically, and it seems the Lord is opening the door for me to return to regular ministry trips to Liberia,? said Sacra. ?My physician colleagues are working very hard, keeping ELWA Hospital open for a wide range of patients, as well as managing Ebola patients at the ELWA 2 unit. I hope to be able to lighten their load, providing both compassionate care to our patients, as well as contributing in some small way to rebuilding and refreshing the staff, which has been through so much in the past six months.?

(CNN)?Sunday, January 18, 2014

Wow! Sunday evening, it's 9:30 p.m., and I am beat. Might fall asleep. Guess I will find out how the Patriots did in the AFC playoff tomorrow (the game would have started at 11:40 p.m. local time).

I arrived here in Liberia Friday evening, January 16, after a 26 hour trip (three flights with a long layover in Brussels), with my seven pieces of luggage, filled mostly with donated drugs and supplies for ELWA Hospital, the ministry SIM runs just outside Monrovia.

I've spent some time catching up with our SIM Liberia country director, Will, who just got back here from the UK about five days ago, and Dr. John, my colleague who has been anchoring the hospital medical staff throughout the Ebola crisis.
