Sierra Leone quarantines one million ahead of UN Ebola talks

Freetown (AFP) - Sierra Leone began a quarantine of more than one million people Thursday in the largest lockdown in west Africa's deadly Ebola outbreak, as world leaders met to discuss the crisis at the United Nations.

The northern districts of Port Loko and Bombali were to be closed off along with the southern district of Moyamba -- effectively sealing in around 1.2 million people.

With the eastern districts of Kenema and Kailahun already under quarantine, more than a third of the population of six million, in five of the nation's 14 districts, now finds itself unable to move freely.

Sierra Leone Isolates 3 More Areas in Response to Ebola

September 25, 2014 9:13 AM

Sierra Leone's government has placed three more districts under isolation as it tries to fight an outbreak of Ebola.

President Ernest Bai Koroma said late Wednesday the isolation of Port Loko and Bombali in the north and Moyamba in southern Sierra Leone will "pose difficulties" for people there, but that the lives of everyone are more important.

Two of the country's 14 districts were already under isolation, and the move comes days after Sierra Leone ended a three-day nationwide lockdown.

How exactly does one isolate entire districts? I really don't understand....

It doesn't seem possible - maybe it's another effort to convince everyone that they are keeping things under control?

Unless they are paying people to self quarantine, they must intend to use force. It appears that area may be too large to control without citizen compliance.

Army being used at borders already, maybe expanding mission inland?

"Responding, the Director General in the Ministry of Defence, Abdul R.M. Fofanah said he never doubted China’s friendship and praised them for their continued support towards building a better Sierra Leone.
He said when the Late Siaka Stevens opened the doors to China, he never made a mistake, as today China is appreciated by every Sierra Leonean because of the seriousness to end the Ebola virus.
He praised the Chinese and urged them not to relent because China is more a brother than a friend to Sierra Leone."
