Shrimp farmers in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong have reported outbreaks of Decapod iridescent virus 1 (Div1), a virus that affects shrimp populations.

The disease is not known to be harmful to humans, but can decimate shrimp in just a few days. Fears are now mounting about the potential of the virus to threaten the country’s shrimp industry, much like the African swine flu (ASF) crisis did to China’s pork supplies last year. The news comes amid heightened attention on the vulnerabilities and dangers of the current broken food system due to the coronavirus pandemic.

First detected back in 2014, Div1 has made a return earlier this year in February, infecting around a quarter of shrimp farms in Guangdong province, a key seafood producer region in China. The disease is not harmful to humans, but local farmers are now fearful that the infectiousness and lethality of the virus to shrimp will lead to mass deaths that parallel that of the African swine fever (ASF) crisis, which wiped out almost a quarter of global pork supplies, with China bearing the brunt of the shortage.

Epidemiological commentsActive surveillance was conducted for 103 shrimp farms from May 8 to 21 in 2020, and one redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) farm was confirmed with positive reaction to nucleic acid of Decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1). Due to the first detection of DIV1 case in Chinese Taipei, the Council of Agriculture immediately initiated a comprehensive monitoring of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) , grass shrimp (Penaeus monodon), giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), crab and all crawfish farms. At the same time, 2 whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farms and 1 grass shrimp (Penaeus monodon) farm were also confirmed with DIV1 infection. Active surveillance is still ongoing, and any positive result will be included in follow-up reports. As of June 17 2020, 12 redclaw crayfish farms, 3 whiteleg shrimp farms and 1 grass shrimp farm were positive for DIV1.

China is making further moves to try to link the spread of coronavirus and food shipments. And yet again, U.S. officials are rebuffing the attempt, emphasizing what’s considered to be the established science on the matter -- that no proof of that link exists.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a fresh statement on the matter after China said samples of imported shrimp tested positive for the virus.

“We have no evidence that Covid-19, a respiratory virus, is transmitted through food or food packaging,” FDA spokesman Peter Cassell said in an email.

China has been stirring the pot over whether the pathogen can spread through food or frozen products, drawing the connection against the advice of global health experts and authorities.

Last month, the Asian country pointed to imported salmon as a possible culprit for Beijing’s fresh Covid-19 outbreak, sparking a boycott of the fish as supermarkets took the produce off their shelves. China also began mass testing of cold food imports at ports, and blocked shipments from meat plants abroad that reported infections among workers.

In the latest move, China halted imports from three Ecuadorian plants linked to the shrimp samples. The announcement created a new level of uncertainty in the global meat, poultry and seafood trade that further shipments or sales could be disrupted...

So far, the GAC has suspended imports of products from 23 overseas meat companies. Many countries and companies are actively cooperating with China. The customs authority said that 10 of them had suspended their exports to China spontaneously according to Chinese requirements.
