By Dan Scanlan

A pyramid of soles rose Tuesday in front of the Jacksonville Sheriff?s Office, as 54 boxes filled with new and slightly used shoes made a stop en route to earthquake victims in Haiti.

Collected over the past few weeks by uniformed and civilian employees at the Sheriff?s Office as well as its jail facilities, the shoe collection heads to Miami, then Haiti to be distributed by the Florida General Baptist Convention.

Police Services Chief Greg Burton organized the shoe drive after his pastor, the Rev. Gary Williams at First Baptist Church of Mandarin, asked his congregation for help. The church is a convention member.
